Hi Ruth
A little success, I think. First, can I assume that your estimated birth year for John was based on the 1841 census? The ages given on the 1841 were often way out....Amelia Mounser, for example, was apparently 76 when she was buried in 1870....so born around 1794. I would recommend that you buy the 1848 death certificate for John and see what age is given there.

Now to the nitty-gritty.
Arthur Mounsor married Betty Purdon in Eastrington on 20 Jan 1789.
They had a son, Arthur, baptised 24 Nov 1789
and a son JOHN MOWNSER baptised 27 Feb 1791
The register states that they were living in Gilberdyke (which, like many of the villages around there, did not have its own church at the time)

Amelia WILLIAMSON, described as a labourer from Newport, had an illegitimate daughter, Ann, baptised in Eastrington on the 5 Nov 1816

The only other Mounser I could find in the baptisms between 1724-1863 was John and Amelia's son, George on the 15 Feb 1820. I also checked burials between 1790 and 1851 and could find no Mounsors or variants.

When I got home, I searched the familysearch site and came up with a Thomas Mounsor, son of Arthur and Elizabeth, born 3 Dec 1799 and baptised 15 Jan 1800 in South Cave.

Given the replication of the name Arthur, the presence of the widowed Elizabeth with John and Amelia in 1841 and the Eastrington connection, I think it is almost certain that your John was the son of Arthur and Betty/Elizabeth.

Best wishes

Kim

From familysearch.org

Amelia Williamson, daughter of John & Mary born 30 Sep 1793 and baptised 3 Jan 1794 in South Cave

Kim

Kim Report 13 Sep 2011 17:40

And Elizabeth Purdon baptised 12 Apr 1772 in South Cave, daughter of Thomas Purdon.
or
Betty Purdon baptised 20 Jul 1769 in South Cave, daughter of John Purdon

There's also a marriage in South Cave between Thomas Purdon and Elizabeth Purdon 30 Dec 1760
and
John Purdon and Elizabeth Wildes 8 Jun 1762

Soooo annoying when they all call their children the same forename!

Kim

Kim Report 13 Sep 2011 17:45

Betty Mounsier baptised 12 Sep 1803, Blacktoft, daughter of Arthur

Kim

Kim Report 13 Sep 2011 17:55

By the way, I looked at the Howden registers and there were quite a lot of Mounseys there in the 1500s and 1600s, then they seemed in the main to have moved on.

I was intrigued by the baptisms of Elizabeth and Ann Mounsey, daughters of Arthur on 22 Nov 1743 and 25 Apr 1745 respectively. Arthur was "of Asselby"...yet another village around there. I wonder if he is your John's greatgrandad (or maybe even grandad)

Kim

Kim Report 13 Sep 2011 17:58

I looked at familysearch.org and a marraige between Arthur and Elizabeth/Betty Purdon is there but three different dates and two different venues are given. I wouldn't know if another Arthur Mounser married another Elizabeth Purdon in St Michael's in York but as far as Eastrington goes, the information I have given above is correct!

Best wishes

Hi A of GG and Kim.

Thank you both so much for your efforts. My internet has been down for 24 hours so have just seen your latest postings. I have seen the John Monsieur and Rebekah Stringer line before and agree that it doesn't quite fit.
Kim, I need to work through all the info that you've found but am quite excited about it; it seems promising. It's great to think you've probably found the mysterious Elizabeth. I did notice Arthur Mouncey in the Howden registers and wondered about him too.

Anyway it looks as though I've got plenty to keep me occupied for a while.

many thanks and Best wishes

You're welcome, Ruth.
If I get the chance next week, I'll have another look and see if I can find out where Arthur came from and was buried. I'll also look at that marriage entry for Holy Trinity in Hull and see who the witnesses were and if any clue is given as to where they were living.

A pity they didn't stay in Howden as the Rector in the late 18thc was really helpful in giving occupations, areas and even ages and causes of death.

Best wishes

Regarding Ann the illegitimate daughter of Amelia Williamson, Amelia's son with John Mounsor, Arthur, married an Ann Williamson in 1845 in Beverley. This seems to suggest that Arthur married his half-sister. Was this a common practice?

Sounds downright illegal to me...I wonder (hope) it's a different Ann Williamson - a cousin? Do you have the marriage certificate, Ruth?

Ruth, the Ann who married Arthur looks to have been born 5-6 years after Amelia's illegitimate daughter (from census). Possibly a cousin.
