Find Ancestors

I am unable to find birth records for Thomas Hope c1799 and his son Richard Hope c1820 born in Leigh Lancashire. Thomas married Jane ? and Richard married Ann Gee in 1845. I have all census information regarding Richard except for 1841 so can't figure out why there appears to be no record of their births. Can anyone please advise?

Thank you very much Ann. Don't know the names of the parents of Thomas, so could be either! Am suspecting John Hope as there are other Johns further down the family tree but no Henry's. That's as logical as I get!!

When you say "Birth Records" were you expecting to find an entry in the birth index?

Civil registration of births did not begin in England or Wales until the September quarter of 1837, it did not become compulsory until 1874. Prior to 1837 there were no birth records. If the child was baptised (Not all were) then the best record you are likely to find is their baptism record.

Have just considered your final comment and am now not sure. In the absence of birth record evidence giving Richard's fathers name as Thomas then I guess I must be searching for Charles!! I only got the name Thomas from another tree which is why I started seeking out evidence of birth information. Seems like I was right to do so.
