but that is -a- Richard, we don't know that it is -the- Richard, that is why I am hoping that Shelly will tell us what the marriage certificate tells us about -the- Richard who married Jane Barber, and about his father, etc

The criminal registers show a Richard Goodhew in court on 5 occasions and each one gave him a prison sentence. The last one was at Lewes Kent on 7th May (EDIT)1887 he was convicted of 'feloniously wounding with intent to murder' for which he was given 20 years penal servitude.

Jooleh Report 10 Nov 2011 19:13

Yes shortly after the marriage if it's the right Richard. Newspaper reports (accessed with my library card) suggest that on Saturday 27th February 1887 he attacked a woman by the name of Berry, with whom he had been living, with a kitchen knife in a pub in Chatham. He struck at her temple, cut her ear and then her neck. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition. She was the assistant in the lodging house he was staying at and he was jealous when he saw her drinking with another man. He admitted taking the knife along with him with the intention of murdering her. One assumes she survived as it was attempted murder he was tried for.
