Thank you Choccy for all the trouble you've gone to!! It's just wonderful to receive all this assistance...!
It's very much appreciated!

Received your PM as well.Thoughtful of you.

Choccy, are you able to tell me what 'otp' means after the name Henry Cox and again after Catherine Hobday on their marriage entry?
I take it Anne Burton and Thomas Brenchly were the witnesses to the marriage?
Interesting how Cunley became Conley.....

Thank you again for all that wonderful information! You've made my day!

Kind Regards, Marg

Choccy also backs up Kathleen Bells earlier information. So it all ties in nicely! Thanks again Kathleen.

If any Cox/Conley researchers can tell me the name of Henry Cox's first wife, whom he married sometime between 1861 and 1871, I would be grateful.
I'm happy to share the Cox Family Tree information ( after their 1853 arrival in Australia ) that I have.

Thanks again to everyone who responded to my request for information!

otp means of this parish in relation to the publication of Banns and yes they were the witnesses to the marriage. Names do change over the years but one has to bear in mind that the Rector/Curate could only record the name he heard from his parishioner. However, it is the case, in Monks Horton, that the name is consistently Cunley.

Thanks Choccy. Good luck with your own Family research!

I'm not far from this part of Kent.... was in Brabourne last weekend. Saltwood is even nearer.

If you would like me to check any local parish registers please send specific requests and I will do my best to help.

Thank you Gwyn! I do have a bit of a puzzle at the moment.... though I'm not sure if you'll be able to help.

As Kathleen has already stated...Henry Cox ( son of Henry and Catherine (nee Hobday) born on 04.04.1842 in Kennington) appeared on the 1861 Census as umarried and living at Sturry Rd North Gate Canterbury, but on the 1871 Census he is listed as a widower, living at West St Faversham with the Conley Family. ( he went on to marry Harriet Conley on May 28th, 1871).

It would be good if you could uncover the name of Henry's first wife and when they married?
Though if that turns out to be too troublesome to find out the details....I will understand.

Thanks again for volunteering your help, Gwyn.

Kind Regards, Marg

Hi Margaret,

Do you have Henry's marriage certificate from when he married Harriet Conley?

If so does it give his marital status as "bachelor" or "widower". It's just that the 1871 census could just be wrong about him being a widower (although that IS what he is down as). I just can't see another marriage for him.

Hello again Kath,

No, I don't have Henry's Marriage Certificate, another relative gave me those dates. Nothing else is known by the family.

I'll keep on working on that one for a while then....

Thanks for getting back to me.

My OH was in the Archives at Canterbury Cathedral this morning and took the opportunity to check the marriage of Henry Cox and Harriet Conley at Brabourne. The details were as follows
Date 28 May 1871
Henry Cox - Bachelor (Labourer)
Harriet Conley - Spinster
both of full age
Grooms father - Henry Cox (Labourer)
Brides father - Edward Conley (Farmer)
The witnesses were Edward Conley and Elizabeth Conley

So either the census was in error or the marriage detail was incorrect. As no marriage appears to have been found, to fit, it seems more likely that the census was incorrect and Henry was a bachelor when he married Harriet.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Choccy! Please thank your OH :) for taking the time to check that out for me!!

It certainly is looking as if the title, widower, was an error.

I really appreciate everyone's effort in helping me to unlock the past.....it's absolutely fascinating...watching it unfold.

:-)
