Find Ancestors

My apologies - it was the 1860 that wasn't clear - when they were in Philadelphia - but there is nothing i can do on that. I was thinking if i could see the neighbours - that may give me some clues (as i suspect they came and were linked to people in that locality.

Also - the big thing now is to get a lead on the ship they came in on - to see if they were going to see someone. the problem i have is that it seems that shipping lists are just pdf - on family search - with no index - so 50k plus entries.

why am i doing this - I am chasing a the Motherwells of Donegal (and there weren't a lot of them) and some seem to have come to Philadelphia (including James Motherwell who dies there in 1847 [have found his death record on family serach - phaldelpia records].

James Caldwell Risk is critical to the search as his kids have reference to Motherwell and Caldwell - which is a family name - (and when he was in Donegal - in 1851 - his Aunt [Miss Mary Motherwell] die at his house.

There is also a Sarah Motherwell who was on the 1860 Philadelpia Census -who is is interesting to me - she died I think in 1864 - somehow - I think this links to the Motherwell exodus.

And to make matters more complicated there seems to be spelling variations for the family (Motherall and Motheral)

I need to get another hobby ....

So ... if i can get more detail on Jame Caldwell Motherwell and who he met in Philly and whether he had links in San Francisco before going out - it increase the chance of solving a puzzle

Also - is it possible to see the actual 1860 census for Philadelphia for free

You can search the FS site (URL given above) for all censuses 1850 on. E.g.,:

As you probably know, Philadelphia was a port in Philadelphia Co PA, on the Delaware R.
The next Co downstream, adjacent to the state of Delaware, was Delaware Co PA.

One used to be able to get free images for most years on FS, but not now (not 1860, e.g.).
For an 1860 image, go to

and click on PA. Pick reel 1158 and read online. (Note the last 3 digits of the LDS film # match those of the NARA reel #). Alter

Now pick a name on that page, say:

So far as I'm aware, the only site where one can easily page thru transcribed households is the old LDS transcription of the 1880 at:

There is a public tree (Kilgore Family Tree) which has a David Rankin Risk and also a James Caldwell Risk on - when i do the search. Could someone check it for me and see how they are linked to the tree owner. Want to see if there is a firm link before i consider signing up.

Christopher - if it's just the tree you want to see, and maybe contact the owner, you don't need to join Ancestry.

They have a sister site, Mundia, which is free to register and use the trees.

Once you've registered just use "Find People" on the menu. It's always worth having a copy of your tree on there to find matches, especially as it costs nothing.
