Hi, Could anyone help me to find out about George Ashiel Bright born in Devon about 1845 changed his name to George Dawe, his wifes name was Mary Selina Dawe also born in Devon, and how would I be able to get a birth and death certificate as I Live in Liverpool where George came to live and changed his name, it looks as though he must have married the same woman twice, my great grandfather was William Dawe born in Liverpool in 1879. Any information will be of a great help, Thanks Lin.

So George changed his name to his wife's surname ?

Marriages Sep 1864 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bright George Ashiel - Stoke D 5b 605
Dawe Mary Selina Adams - Stoke D. 5b 605

Could this be his death? :-

Name: DAWE, George
Registration District: West Derby
County: Lancashire
Year of Registration: 1920
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 80
Volume No: 8B
Page No: 395

This would make him born slightly earlier than you thought although the age at death can be wrong as it depends on how well the informant knew the deceased.

What makes you think he married the same woman twice?

Just noticed in 1881 Mary is a SAILOR'S WIFE so doubt that is George working as a servant.

If birthplace is actually Sowton..........................

EDIT :

Don't think it's him born Sourton so have deleted the birth I found.

You can order certificates online from

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

quote the district and reference numbers ( will cost £9.25 each )

If the George given above in the 1881 census is the corect one then this could be his birth:-

Name: BRIGHT, George
Registration District: St. Thomas
County: Devon
Year of Registration: 1841
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume No: 10
Page No: 212

Sourton given as his birthplace on the census could be Sowton which is in the St. Thomas Registration district.

EDIT - I think this is wrong as Sourton is in the Okehampton Registration district. I can't find a birth registered there so his birth may not have been registered at all as there was no penalty for not registering a birth until 1875.

More inclined to think this is him in view of Mary being a Sailor's wife

You need to start with the marriage cert for George and Mary Selina.
Hopefully it will give you father's names.

At this stage I can't see a birth for Mary Selina either.

Can anyone read what it says on:
Ancestry:
England, Andrews Newspaper Index Cards, 1790-1976 about George Ashiel Bright
Name: George Ashiel Bright
Father's Name: Jas
Publication Date: 1864

It LOOKS like it gives the GRO ref for his marriage and then something like
Son of James a retired drillmaster>(officer???). I could be making that up!

Off to bed for me.

Hi Lin,
I tried to respond to your PM but GR keeps giving me an error message. grrr

I'm not getting anywhere with this tangled mess. Where did the surname Triggs pop up from?

The 1864 marriage cert would be interesting to see. It's difficult to be certain that they're the same couple.

Mike * Report 9 Feb 2012 23:47

So she could have married 2 Georges ( One G.A. Bright 1864, one G.T.Dawe/Dawl 1871)
which means George didn't change his name ...

and her father's name was Triggs .
