The only way you will know what is correct or not, is to buy the certs....it all adds up though!

Beverley, I'm not sure where Ellie got the 1904 shipping record. It may have been Ancestry (paid subscription site). You can search New York shipping lists for free on the Ellis Island site http://www.ellisisland.org/

I looked at the original image of the transcription that Ellie posted of a Martin Jordan arriving in New York in 1904. The original image had the details for that record crossed out. What that usually means is that the passenger's details were recorded but they didn't actually travel.

I'm not even sure that the 1904 shipping record was for your Martin Jordan - the details given for that one (even though he didn't travel) were for a labourer from Dublin.

Re Martin Jordan/Martin Cassidy

It is possible that there are two individuals.

[Edit: the 1881 census has two young women in the Cassidy household
Bridget Cassidy head widow 58 b Ireland
>>> Kate Cassidy daughter unm 21 b Ireland
Martin Murphy lodger marr 32 b Ireland
Mary Ann Murphy daughter - 9 b Birstall (so presumably Martin's child, not Bridget's)
Thomas Murphy son - 2 b Batley (so presumably Martin's child, not Bridget's)
John Cassidy lodger marr 27 b Ireland
>>> Mary Cassidy wife marr 23 b Ireland (so presumably John's wife, not Bridget's)
Martin Cassidy son - 2 wks b Batley - so perhaps John and Mary's son, and if John is brother to Kate, then this Martin may be the nephew reported in the later census?

Indeed, in 1891 there is only Martin Jordan age 10, but in 1901 there is both Martin Jordan age 20 and Martin Cassidy boarder age 19, presumably the Martin Cassidy aged 30 in 1911

- and the nephew's father may have died in 1887?
John Cassidy abt 1853 Apr-May-Jun 1887 Dewsbury]

Alick/Ulick does not appear to be on the 1881 census, and may be still in Ireland at that point He does not marry Catherine until 1888.

As posted above, in 1891 the family were:
Alick Jordon 30
Catherine Jordon 32
Martin Jordon 10
Mary E Jordon 8
Annie Jordon 6 (all three children reported as being born in Batley),
so even Annie's birth is before the marriage.

Ulick/Alick may have had Martin, Mary and Annie by a different wife, perhaps married in Ireland? This would be consistent with Catherine reporting in 1911 that she married approximately 1889 and had only one child in the marriage (Michael b about 1892). However, I am not sure that this fits with trying to find the death of a previous wife.

There are these deaths of adult females in the Dewsbury registration district (Batley is in the Dewsbury district)

Elizabeth Jordan age 48 death reg'd Oct-Nov-Dec 1887
- but perhaps the wife of Thomas in Dewsbury in 1881 age 47?

Mary Jordan age 18 death reg'd Jul-Aug-Sep 1883
- probably too young to be Alick/Ulick's wife and perhaps the daughter of Thos and Elizabeth in Dewsbury in 1881?

It seems more likely then that Catherine may be the mother of some or all of Martin, Mary E and Annie (edit: particularly because Alick/Ulick reports being married for 30 years in 1911). I looked for baptisms in the online collection from WY archives and found none for this family but the collection does not include the Roman Catholic church baptisms.

Were the births registered? If so, were they registered as Jordan or as Cassidy?

Hi, keep trying without any luck so far.Going to take some time to digest all this info, and discuss it with my friend who's family the Jordans belonged to. Can any one find Ulick/Alick/Elick on the 1901 census. I

Beverley

Beverley Report 26 Feb 2012 11:45

sorry about the previous post ,the keep trying bit should have been at the bit about the 1901 census and me not being able to find Ulick

Ivy

Ivy Report 26 Feb 2012 12:04

He isn't obvious on the England census for 1901.

I note that his place of birth is given as County Mayo on the 1911 census and there is an Ulick/Alick Jordan in County Mayo on the Ireland 1901 census (transcribed as Alick but looks like Ulick on the image). However, he is a farmer with numerous children, so unlikely to be Michael's father.

The Irish 1901 census is free to view online, and might represent relatives to the family that you are following?

Your friend really needs to buy the certificates for the birth of Martin, marriage of Catherine and also the death for Martin....all been posted earlier

Ivy

Ivy Report 26 Feb 2012 18:40

... and if not already purchased, to add details such as addresses and winesses etc for

John's birth
John Jordan Oct-Nov-Dec 1910 Dewsbury 9b 486

Michael's marriage
Michael Jordan Apr-May-Jun 1910 Dewsbury 9b 1109

Michael's birth
Michael Jordon Apr-May-Jun 1892 Dewsbury 9b 643

and if these confirm Ulick as the father, then the two certificates for the marriages posted above too?
