Find Ancestors

I have found a branch family in 1911 census in Dudley.

Head is Charity Homer (Widow) aged 57

With her are daughters Louise 21, Lily 19 and Gertrude 16. And then another family William Aston, son-in-law, 37, his wife Florence, daughter, 31 and their son William, grandson, 3.

Florence is Florence Eliza (this is a guess - only references are to E in 1881 and 1901 censuses - haven't found her in 1891). Shown as married 5 years, one child (obviously living).

My problem is that I can't find a marriage between William Aston and Florence Homer (neither in the five year range or beyond). I can find a marriage between a Florence Eliza and a William but it's in 1907 and he's Millichope. And I can find several marriages in the right time for William Aston in Dudley but none to a Florence.

As an aside I have found what I assume is a later child Arthur in Sep 1916

Any thoughts?

Andrew - bingo I thing that explains it! I have assumed the Eliza (but I have found a birth entry that would fit it). It's slightly later than the census would account for but it has to be so!

Gins - can't find a connection but have had a look on it (on FMP as it appears to have gone awol on A) and it is most definitely Florence Homer

There may not be a family connection Jude.

The household has a girl of 12 (Lillie) and we know that Florence was of a similar age - they probably were in the same class at school and it may just have been a 'sleep-over' for her with her friend?

It is always worth looking for a firmer connection though, but I can't see an obvious one either.

Penny - not with you! This is them in 1881 - Charity was Oliver before her marriage and Sarah Ann is their eldest daughter - the only one missing in 1911 (I have assumed she was married and living elsewhere ....haven't found her in 1901 either.

That baffled me too Jude but I think that Penny is referring to the fact that she was alive in 1881 when she is said to be 9 in 1891.

However, in view of later census's, I believe they just guessed at her age on the 1891?

I have her in 1881 and it's definitely them (and therefore) her. Birth record is Q1 1881 so she was a month or so old - census 03/04

And in 1901 she is 20 and in 1911 she is 31

In 1891 - census also 03/04 - she is showing as 9.

Consider this....born late March 1881 and registered immediately. So in 1881 only a week old.
1891 - if she has no family with her ...she gives her age as 9 where she is really just 10?

I believe on one of the census's I saw her on (can't remember which), but the image said LOUIE not LOUISE ??

This then would be her birth?

I think Louise (transcribed as Lainie in 1911) is actually Emily Louisa - Emily L in 1891 and 1901 censuses.

This family seemed to have the annoying trend of using their middle names from 1911 on!!!! Charity Gertrude is Gertrude, Emily Louisa is Louise

The missing older sister in 1911 is Sarah Ann. The last time I find her is in 1891. Perhaps on the basis of what I just said I should search for Ann Sarah :-)
