Elizabeth in 1851 is the age that Isabel (not recorded as Isabella) would have been - and there is no Elizabeth in 1841.

The two names could sound similar if not enunciated clearly

There is a four year gap between the death of Henry's first wife and his re-marriage - so who knows who the parents were of the children born in the interim period

I remarked on the discrepancy between 1841 and 1851 at the top of this page, and suggested a possible reason for it.

You still have not told us which, if any, of the 1841/1851Cowburns is your 100% proven relative.

It's easier to try to help you if we know the facts on which you are working.

My mistake re: the other man's name - transposed some info

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 18 May 2012 14:04

it has already been proved that the death in 1838 is not your Isabella - see p1 of this thread

a) if she died in 1838 she would have not have been on the 1841 census

b) she was age 1 in 1838 when that death took place (see lancashirebmd.org.uk) and your Isabella was born about 1833

Cowburn was a fairly common name in the are of Blackburn / Lowr Darwen

looking at the births on lancs bmd at just 1839 - 1841 there are 8 different mother's maiden names recorded

Douglas Report 18 May 2012 14:19

you may be waiting a long time for that range...........

this is what they hold at the Lancs record office

BLACKBURN, St Paul; Diocese of Blackburn
C 1792-1955 M 1854-1955 B 1792-1912 Orig reg on
microfiche to 1900 PR 3340
C 1830-1840 B 1830-1840 Copy BT Microfilm DRB 2/17

I was using the microfilm yesterday so did not see any baptisms before 1830 but there was no Isabella or Elizabeth Cowburn (or variants) 1833 - 1840. The only ones I found I gave you in my last post

if you can let me know specific names and rough dates (possibly of later ones to prove you have the right line??) I will look next time I go

Hi Vera
I reread you said you did not have Isabella Cowburn in your tree
dose this mean you have cowburns if so where are you connected.
I also missed info which as help me leave Joseph & Anthony on the tree & Anns Death, may be Isabella / Elizabeth were born before Anns death because 1841 census can be or can not be 5yrs out as others dependen on who gave info or was taken at census time. any comment from 5yrs out.

according to 1881 Robert was born in Oswldtwistle. The main church in Oswaldtwistle was not opened until 1837. Before that apparently the church used was St james in Church Kirk which is not online. I wonder if that is the missing link between Robert and the correct Henry

I don't think I have seen a baptism for Robert on this thread

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 19 May 2012 23:04

Vera was trying to convey that she is not connected.

If anyone on here did have a connection, they would tell you

Ann died in the March qtr of 1932. Any child born before her death would have been older than 8 in 1841

The general instruction re 1841 census was that ages of over-15's were to be rounded down to the nearest 5 - under 15's had their ages recorded accurately (or as accurately as was known by the person giving the info)
