Annie Lilian Richardson 1869-1953 in the 1891 and 1901 census indicates she was born in Hereford, Herefordshire. She married Charles Frederick Smitten on March 29, 1891 in the Parish of Islington, Middlesex. Her marriage certificate shows father as Henry and is witnessed by Elizabeth Richardson (possibly mother) and Charles Fuller. Am looking for any trace of her prior to her marriage.

I have looked previosly at this person but the Annie (father Henry Proctor Richardson) is not my Annie because my Annie appears in the 1891 census as married and Annie the daughter of Henry Proctor Richardson appears in the 1891 census as single. I also have a copy of her marriage certificate.

Thank you all for your help but am still searching.

The Dorothy Beatrice Hall (Smitten) referred to above is my mother. Not to be confused with the Smitten, Dorothy born in W. Ham in 1911. That person was the daughter of Albert George Smitten - her name was Dorothy Bessie Smitten (married name Fox )as indicated by one of the posts. There does not appear to be a birth certificate for my mother.

I can't find anything on her birth either and I'm her daughter. I think my mother tried to get a copy of her birth certificate when she got a passport but the records office couldn't find it. I'm not sure what she used to get her passport but she did have one although I believe they have all been thrown away.

Hi Linda

On the 1911 census Annie Lilian and Charles Frederick Smitten had been married 20 years and had not had any children.

Do you think your mother was "adopted" by them? maybe that's why there's not a birth cert under the name of Smitten

Do you have her marriage certificate? does that give any clues?

LSandor Report 27 Jul 2012 21:02

My mother was born in 1912. She was not adopted. She was probably born in Wimbledon which was where her parents were living in 1911 and she also lived in Plumstead.

Would you mind telling me what your connections are, .

I am a member on here who is trying to help you find information, as are the others.

I am not connected to your family, I am sorry if I have offended you, but am merely trying to help you find information you have so far been unable to find.

So far we have all been unsuccessful in locating a record of your mother's birth, one of the next possibilities could have been as I suggested.

Not sure you meant to mark 2nd posting above as 'answered' - this might stop people looking at your thread.
Unless you have a good reason not to do so, I think you need to consider the possibility as suggested by tempest that your mother was informally adopted - no formal adoptions till 1927. Especially as her parents were childless after 20 years of marriage. It was very common back then for children not to be told about their true parentage.

No offence taken. I have been using ancestry and didn't realize so many people would try to help on this site. It's very nice that people take the time to do that. Thank you all.
