This is the family in the 1871 census . There is a John as son aged 3 - says the same on the original, so has the John mentioned in the OP but not on the 1861 census died? There are several John Hampson deaths in the Wigan area in the right time frame, but of course no ages!

You can safely say that Peter 1860 did not marry as he died in 1862

the 2 missing from MarieCeleste's list are the 1st Peter and Maria born 1873

Mark - Robert was one of their later children, but if you don't want the info then I'll delete it.

I appreciate your help i am just a bit confused and wondered if their other child with same name as the one that died married

possibly not the one married to Edith Hirst as that marriage was at Salford registry office in 1892

you would need the marriage certificate to find out. There are quite a few Peter Hampsons born in the Wigan are in the right timescale including one born in Salford

They appear to have had more than one child die, both John and Peter appear as later names and there was also an Ellen bap. 1855 who is not on the 1861 census

By 1891 Peter and Jane are at home with only Peter 25, Grace 19 and Maria 17
