Hi all,

Looking for Clara Agnes Henderson, parents were James Henderson (1836) and Agnes Bayliffe (1843 but with various spellings of the surname).

I have Clara until 1901 with her parents in Lindale/Cartmel (Lancashire) where she was a gen. domestic servant. I believe from a cousin she went to South Africa (& got married but don't know if this was UK or SA), but can't find the passage or any marriage in UK for her.

Anyone got access to SA records or can help please?

Thanks in advance :-D

Hi Ann, thanks for the input, but not the right Agnes (I have her birth certificate, parents William Bayliffe/Mary Butterfield), however where did the emigration for Clara come from please?

Sorry Ann, think I was a bit confusing. Clara's parents were James Henderson and Agnes Bayliffe, it was Agnes's parents who were William Bayliffe and Nancy Butterfield. Although I can't find a marriage for her parents even in parish registers but I have her bc.

Her mother Mary Bayliffe (nee Butterfield) was a "lodging house keeper" and Agnes had at least 4 children before she married James Henderson - with never a husband in sight! Agnes also had younger sisters - with no father recorded on their christenings according to the Cartmel parish records!

Hi Catherine,

Catherine

Catherine Report 11 Nov 2012 16:07

Sorry Flip,
Got distracted.
Original just states that she is a Nurse travelling from Melbourne.
There is also a Mrs. Marston with a child aged 2yrs old, so could be she was travelling with them, but nothing to proove it.
Sorry.

Thanks for checking Catherine, not very conclusive unfortunately. I'm really not sure about that passage as there was no connection to Australia that I know of.

I know records are being added to all the time, so could anyone check if there is any sign of her on GR or FMP - I've already done another check on Ancestry and Family Search but found nothing.

According to her brother Mauice, she definitely went to South Africa, but have had no luck so far in finding a UK marriage for her or a passage to SA under her maiden name. Maurice's son Leslie passed on this information before he died.

There were other family connections with SA because Maurice's wife's (Dora Kendall) sister Fanny Wilkinson, died in 1935 whilst her husband was in SA - he was a miner. Dora and Fanny's father Thomas Kendall was also a miner in SA, he died in Ulverston, Lancashire in 1905. But I have no way of knowing if any of this is relevant or connected.

Just thought I'd have another look for Clara, and googling her brought up some details on geni.com.

According to the site, she was born 15/8/1881, died 5/8/31 and was married to George Arthur Boyce (16/11/1871 - 22/12/1940). There is a dob for twins born 25/6/1917 - Edna & Eric in Transvaal, SA.

I've tried to verify any of the information, but so far no luck - could someone else take a look please?

Thanks Jacqueline, that's a good possibility - I can't find a Boyce/Henderson marriage in England/Wales. Would also explain why she doesn't appear on the 1911 census. Was she travelling alone please?

I've found confirmation of the years of death for both Clara & George from SA archives, but no other details.
