Find Ancestors

My Mum & I have spent hours searching for the birth record of my great grandmother Rose Ellen

We have a copy of her parish marriage records from St Nicholas, Strood, Kent from 24th April 1892 detailing her marriage to James Ruck. This says her father was George Jarvis (deceased)

We can then find her in the 1901 census, listed as Rose Ruck living in Church Street, Burnham, Kent.

Both of these documents suggest that she was born about 1867

The next time we can find a record of her is her death where she is listed as Ellen Ruck in the March quarter 1949, registered in Maidstone, Kent Vol 5b Page 748. Her headstone in Sittingbourne cemetery refers to her as Ellen Rose Ruck with a date of death of January 30th 1949.

We know that she spent some time in and out of the local workhouse, after her marriage, but I don't think any of these times coincided with census dates.

I'm wondering if anyone can help us in finding any further details so we can follow that branch of the family back. She seems to appear from nowhere for her marriage and then we can't find her in the 1911 census either. Is it possible that her birth wasn't registered?

I have put all of the details here that I have, except the children's names which I can include if it is useful.

There were no penalties for non registration before 1875 .

Have you tried City Ark website for a possible baptism for her.

Are you aware of any siblings she may have had

Could you give us ALL the details from her marriage entry please - names, ages, fathers, occupations, addresses, witnesses etc.

They are Lodgers

There are several Ellen Jarvises born between 1867 and 1869 in Kent.

I have to go out just now but here is a 'little something' to work on:........

The address on marriage entry was Anchor terrace for both.

There are only 3 houses on Anchor Terrace and this was one of them - Could the name to Ruck ???

The witnesses were Amos E Parris who was the local Publican at the Robin Hood Inn and the other was E Russell ??

Both father's were deceased (labourers) - i.e. James Ruck and George Jarvis.

Hi Shirley, it's a usefulness tip about the lack of penalties for not registering before 1875. I have looked on City Ark for a baptism, but only at the church that Rose & James got married at. It's a source I'd forgotten about so I need to go back there. I don't know about any siblings. You have found the correct entry for her in the 1901 census and the census record for Jim is also right. The entry for Edith is probably correct as Rose & the children were in and out of the workhouse a lot and I'm pretty sure that the family sadly were split up while the children were young.

Reggie & Shirley - the Ellen you've both found is the daughter of an Emily Checksfield who married James Julian Jarvis and they lived in High Street Tenterden (I think he was a green grocer). I've researched all of this side late one night because I thought I'd found my Rose, but it doesn't look like that Ellen was ever married so I've ruled her put

I've been googling anchor terrace but it no longer exists! Also how did you find out that the witness was the local publican? I obviously have a lot to learn
