Can any one help? This lady married Moses Hayes my Great Great Grandfather in 1973. The story in the family is that she came to this country (Newport in 1870) following the Otto Von Bismark war the dates would fit but she arrived pregnant or with a son Joseph born 1870 or 1871.In the census she is listed in one as born Devon and one as born Newport. I can't seem to find her maiden name not sure if it's Cordey (which is a Breton Name) Any advice? The Breton origin has been the source of many tales over the years and my relatives Grandfather and Great Grandfather look Breton. Very strange would like to know more. |

I think your first step (if you haven't already) is to buy the marriage certificate for further info: |

Have you got their marriage cert Margaret? This would show her maiden name (I assume you think she might have married previously?). |

I'm sure there's a Newport in Devon? Could that have been mistaken as Newport in Monmouthshire on the 1881? |

This is obviously the Mary you have for 1871. However, have you noticed the other Cardey's on the next page? |

I think the surname on the image looks more like Canfer, but not finding any records under either variation. |

I know Cansfer doesn't look like Kentspear, but say them out loud: |
