there's another child in Ireland
Name: Rossana Catherine Mcsweeny

Birth Place: Lifford, Donegal, Ireland
Father's Name: John Mcsweeny
Mother's Name: Jane Mcauley Mcsweeny

which might explain why Eugene is missing in 1881.

And this could be him dying

Name: John M'Sweany

Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1878
Death Age: 36
Registration District: Strabane
Death Country: Ireland

None of which helps in your search for George though :-(

So Si....I think your first purchase needs to be the marriage certificate between George and Jane McSweeney which may show his father?

Familysearch has the "intended" marriage of Jane McSweeney and George Lewis, dated 10/4/1879 at St Aiden's which I believe is in Walton. Although his age is about 10 years out.

Unfortunately lanopc does not have that church's records online.

Sorry, it should be Kirkdale, not Walton, as posted from Lancashirebmd

Good grief!

Only just logged in today, having found a dozen or more emails from GR in my inbox. Can I just say: thank you *very much indeed* to everyone who's added to this thread since my last post yesterday. You've enhanced my knowledge of my wife's ancestry brilliantly, and I've got some following up to do!

Can I ask everyone - what sites did you use to find the records you have, particularly the ones for Jane? They confirm my suspicion that the marriage to George wasn't her first, but it's interesting about Jane's children, certainly.

I'm still waiting impatiently to hear back from Father Kassinos at the Liverpool Greek Orthodox Church, as that might start to unlock information about George, but now you've opened up the Irish heritage, there's more than enough to occupy me there for ages!

Thanks everyone, and I'll be ordering various certificates next week, I think.

Hi, the records I found for her marriage to Mr Hayes and Mr McSweeney were from ancestry, not sure where Jude's records were from though as I thing she also has a FMP subscription.

Incidently, I found 2 births in Co Tyrone for Jane McAuley with fathers name Patrick in 1856, on rootsireland.ie but you need credits to actually look at the record.

The only way to get back from George is to get his marriage cert as Jude says, even then his anglisised name may not match his birth name. I can't see a naturalisation record for him on the national archives site under George Lewis.

This may be Florence's birth reg. Would fit with her being 11 months old on the 1881 census.......

That could fit Christina, as the 2 Florence Lewis births in 1880 are both "allocated" to parents which are not Jane and George according to their christenings.

Si - Flip - Ancestry for me.

Christina - brilliant - I wasn't happy with the Florence Lewis in West Derby because I knew there was a christening that matched that wasn't George and Jane.

And still - the marriage cert is the best one to start off with because if anything shows his father it will br this.

"So Si....I think your first purchase needs to be the marriage certificate between George and Jane McSweeney which may show his father?"

Indeed. That's the first to do. I've held back because of mismatch between a previous attempt (by someone else) who came up with McAuley as her maiden name. After digging around myself, I became convinced that it was McSweeney, but that McAuley was relevant to her, and suspected a prior marriage. Now I know that this is pretty much likely to be our gal, I'll be sending off for a record of their nuptials.

Thanks again to Jude, Flip and Christine. You really have been stars, and I would have spent months figuring this lot out by myself, if, indeed, I'd ever managed it.

I'll let everyone know what the Greek Orthodox Church in Liverpool comes up with (fingers crossed!).

Thanks,
Si
