Patricia Report 6 Oct 2013 11:37

Hello All,
I was wondering if someone could help me with this one. In 1911 census Mary Anne Johnstone aged 75 years and a Widow birthplace could be Madres? It shows Mary Anne as mother in law. Mary Anne is residing with a Edward J Cragg Williams aged 48 years occupation Acrobat and born Manchester Lancashire. With Edward is his wife Emily and their children Alfred, Elizabeth and Auther.
I am unable to find Mary Anne Johnstone in any other census. I am assuming she is Emily's mother. Tried to find Emily born c1869 Truro Cornwall with a mother of Mary Anne but no luck.
I would greatly appreciate any help with this this query Thank You.
Patricia.

This is the family returning from abroad:

UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
Name: Edward Cragg - an acrobat
Birth Date: abt 1864
Age: 32
Port of Departure: Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Quebec, Quebec, Canada
Arrival Date: 9 May 1896
Port of Arrival: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Lake Winnipeg
Official Number: 81285

Although it says departure Montreal, the family embarked at New York.

Along with Edward was Emily (25), Amanda (2), Alfred (4)

Next on the list is a James Cragg (49) also an acrobat and wife Tilley (29).

Further up the page is a Mary Johnston (53). No way of knowing if this is her or just a coincidence.

Thanks Mike and Holly for finding them in 1901. They used to use the Cragg name as they were known as The Cragg Brothers Acrobats. Edward Williams/Cragg grandmother was a Cragg.
Thanks again.
Patricia.

I don't think that's the right marriage. That Emily married James Henry Warrington:

I think this was them arriving USA, no Mary Johnson with them:

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Edward Cragg
Name: Edward Cragg
Arrival Date: 7 Jul 1890
Birth Date: abt 1864
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: English
Place of Origin: England
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Servia

No occupations for the men, just "tourist"

In the party were:

John W (or M) 44
Amanda 24 wife
Edward 26
Emily 22 wife
Alfred 22
James 20
Cremorn 18 (No idea what the name should be but it's male)
Victoria 10
Arthur 8
Alfred 1½

EDIT: There's a very similar list for 1895 where they are listed as acrobats and there are also actresses and comedians, probably the whole troupe.

Marie,
You mentioned Cremorn. He is hard to find also. Apparently he was named after the racehourse Cremorne . He won the English Derby I think.
Thanks for the info on the passenger lists.
Patricia.
