Yes, or Newell, that looks like her thanks Gins. I'm not sure about the bank record stating she had been in US for 9 years - she was born in 1849 (reg Cockermouth), so she must have been only about 15 when she emigrated. I've just checked the ancestry passenger lists again for around 1864, but not finding her.

Claims Irish, but might just be an assumption:

Sarah Newell
Arrival Date: 18 Aug 1865
Birth Date: abt 1849
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Irish
Place of Origin: Ireland
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Scotland
Search Ship Database: Search the Scotland in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database

It's the only one looking even remotely likely Pat - she must have been very brave going on her own, I can't see any other Newells on that voyage.

Maybe she was going to join uncle/grandfather after all. I think this is her grandfather, who disappeared after the 1861 census - he was a shipwright or ships carpenter on the 1851/61 census:

Edmund Newell
Age in 1870: 77
Birth Year: abt 1793
Birthplace: England
Home in 1870: New York Ward 4 District 4, New York, New York
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: New York City
Value of real estate: View Image
Household Members: Name Age
James Newell 37
Elisa Newell 38
William Newell 18
Mary Jane Newell 17
Ellen Newell 12
Edmund Newell 77 <<<ships carpenter
Samuel Casey 26

Patchem hit:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-16947-71338-16?cc=1849782&wc=9370368
The col headers are on image 139
The non-obvious ones (last 4) are she belongs to Ireland, she intends to habituate the United States, she didn't die on the voyage, and she travelled steerage.

You can look up the United States Census, 1870 via:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_STATES
It has an image link.
She arrived too late for the NY census (1/6/1865).

I'm really grateful to you all, my mother who was brought up by her maternal grandparents (Maurice Henderson, her grandad) following her mother's death at just 22 of meningitis when mum was just 3, remembered her aunt May (although really she was her great aunt). But, although I've managed to fill in a lot of the family history, never had got anywhere with May (Mary Frances) prior to her marriage.

My mother will be thrilled, so really thankful for all this help!
