Interested in anyone connected to James Richardson (mother's M.S. Ritchie) and Helen (or Ellen) McMillan. Helen was born in Kilmarnock in 1872 and married James, from Galston, Ayrshire in the Gordon Halls, Paisley Road, Glasgow in July 1901. James was a coal miner, Helen a confectioner's shop keeper. When first married they lived at 124 Cornwall St, Govan, Glasgow. In 1911 Helen was living at Mill Road, Dalziel, Lanarkshire, with her three children Ronald Campbell Richardson, born 1902, James Richardson, born 1904, and Mary McMillan Richardson, born 1906. Helen was my grandfather's sister.

Any help appreciated

Hi David

You could try searching 'Trees' on here. Use the 'search facility

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 2 Nov 2013 20:06

Was Helen widowed in 1911? As you have their marriage, you will have the names of James's parents so can check on here to see if anyone has them in their tree.

Alternately you can use Scotlandspeople to search for descendants of James and Helen.

David Report 3 Nov 2013 08:29

Hi Gins, yes I've been through the GRU Trees search for the children of Helen and James without success.

Hi Rootgatherer. Helen was shown as Married and Head of house in 1911. I guess James was working away in the mines, though can't track him on census.

I can find no trace of any of them after 1911. No marriages, deaths etc on Scotlandspeople. I am thinking that either they emigrated or that Helen maybe remarried and the children changed surname, but again no marriage to substantiate.

Reggie, that is a terrific call. I've had a look at the original passenger list and Mrs Richardson and children Ronald, James and May (who would be Mary) travelled together, contacted to land at Sydney. The Hy Richardson was on his own and I don't think connected. All are listed as English, but otherwise it ties in perfectly to the ages order of the children. i will do some foraging on the Australian side now.

Thanks so much for taking the time, been looking for these guys for quite a while!

Marie Celeste, thank you so much. What a find! You are a wee gem! Well done Reggie too for the suggestion!

OMG, this is brilliant, it is clearly them. James' parents were Robert and Annie, and Helen (Ellen's) parents were Robert and Mary.

I'm afaid I don't have access to worldwide records, can you please guide me there.

Thank you again, I have been looking for them for about 5 years!

Hello David, I have worldwide subs to Ancestry and FindMyPast so happy to look up records on there.

I'd suggest going to your first post and clicking on "Edit" so you can get back to your heading - add the word Australia to the title and that way one of the researchers who specialises in Oz records (and may have access to more records than my subs cover) will be more likely to spot it.

Meanwhile, check out Trove, the Oz newspaper archive http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper?q= and NSW BMDs http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/bdm_fh.html

There are also some Australian records on FamilySearch

This would be Ronald's marriage:

There's a mention of Isa here, probably in relation to her father's death

Living at 7 Gallagher Street is James snr, a waste examiner; James jnr a wheeler and Ellen McMillan Richardson, home duties.

ADDED: by 1936 there is a Jean Richardson with them at Gallagher Street. I don't know if that's a wife for James jnr or a younger sibling who has become old enough to vote.

MarieCeleste

It looks like Jean was James jnr's wife - there are some memoriam notices here from each of the family on the anniversary of James snr's death

There was also a son Bert??

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Nov 2013 13:08

Have just rechecked the 1936 Electoral Rolls and there is a Robert McMillan Richardson at 7 Gallagher Street, no occupation - he must be the son "Bert" and be born after their arrival in Australia, he was obviously not old enough to be included on the 1930 voters list so born c1915ish.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Nov 2013 13:13

I think the middle name on this marriage is a mistranscription:

9608/1938 RICHARDSON, ROBERT MCKILLAN married EADIE, MARY ALLAN MAIN at CESSNOCK

This is Robert's wife to be in 1937:

Gender: Female
Electoral Year: 1937
State: New South Wales

A laundress, living 8 Gallagher Street (so that's how they met) with Alexander, a miner and Mary - presumably parents
