There's another Croydon marriage witnessed by your William Smith.
This one is for Lucy Elizabeth Smith b.1850 marrying William Battis in 1877.
So it looks likely that the family and marriage mentioned above by Maddie and Chris Ho could be right.
EDIT: Just realised that although the transcript says Lucy married William Battis, the name is really William Baker. Same as the witness to William and Sarah's wedding.

On the 1871 census that Margee posted, that William had a sister called Ann born 1857.
There was an Ann Smith baptised in Thornton Heath, Croydon with parents William and Elizabeth.
Ann Smith, born 1857 got married to William Streetfield in Croydon 1878 The witnesses on her marriage certificate are William and Sarah Ann Smith. These look the same as those signed on William Smith and Sarah Ann Crooks wedding.

aaargh. I am losing the plot.
If I assume my birth cert is correct and his marriage cert then his parents should be Elizabeth and William and he should be about 6 years old but I cant find William Smith born approx 1854 in the 1861 census let alone with his parents
