Hi there,

I'm looking for more information on this chap here. Can anyone help? I.e. can a death be spotted?

I suspect his birth place is Bolton-le-Moor (Lancashire).

Could we find out more about his military career? Also, life before and after the army?

I THINK this may be a distant uncle of mine but not sure.

Thank you BeverleyW - at least we are working on the right lines. That is the assumption I came too. But, what becomes of him?

Thank you for starting the ball rolling.

Ann that is amazing and shows why these boards are so important - I NEVER had heard of Robert before. I presumed all of the family were C of E, but obviously not. Wow, can we find out more about him also?

Thank you - wow, very happy here!

Also, would be nice to find the parents deaths if possible.

They seem to have lived in Great Bolton (I already have the other baptisms).

I also descend from James, baptised 1820, so don't to look into his line but I have no info on the other brothers etc.

Ah they seem a confusing bunch! Erm, not sure where to go from here. Any ideas?

Sorry but just a little lost.

BeverleyW

BeverleyW Report 25 May 2014 21:23

If you think he may be a distant uncle, then presumably he has a brother who is a direct ancestor of yours?
The direct ancestor's parents would be his as well, which would help us narrow down the search.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 25 May 2014 22:58

the Joseph Lever who was in the Royal Marines could have died while in the military

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Royal_Marines#Crimean_War_and_beyond

'During the Crimean War in 1854 and 1855, three Royal Marines earned the Victoria Cross, two in the Crimea and one in the Baltic. ... In the rest of the 19th Century, the Royal Marines served in many landings, especially in the First and Second Opium Wars (1839–1842 and 1856–1860) against the Chinese. These were all successful except for the landing at the Mouth of the Peiho in 1859, where Admiral Sir James Hope ordered a landing across extensive mudflats even though his Brigadier, Colonel Thomas Lemon RMLI, advised against it.'

however as Beverley said you really need to be tracing backward i.e. through your own ancestor to find whether he or she had a relation by this name, rather than starting from a person you think might be related to see what became of him ... he might not be related, or be related in some other way ...

Peter

Peter Report 26 May 2014 11:18

Hi Beverley and JoonieClooney - thank you.

I think Joseph is a brother of my ancestor James, mention in AnnCardiff's posts. I already had those baptisms but as we were working forward with Joseph, not backward, that is why I never mentioned them.

How would I go about with obtaining Joseph's military records?

Chris Ho :)
