Hello Alviegal. I feel the Thomas Rand sent to Toronto by Dr Barnadoes aboard the Vancouver in 1889 could be him and the marriage to Mabel Rose Boyd, although his father was Richard John Rand and not John Richard Rand but then names are sometimes down back to front. I wonder if he ever had further contact with his z2 siblings also put in homes or even with his 8 half siblings. I think it is dreadful what the staff of Dr Barnadoes did to the unfortunate children in their care by sending them abroad away from their kin. I know some made good but then others didn't. I was in an orphanage myself from 1947 until 1953 and was very fortunate I was not separated from my elder brother and we were not sent abroad. Just attended the yearly reunion with all from the orphanage and we are still like a family so feel very lucky to have this bond with them all.

I don't think this can be Arthur Frederick because his parents were Richard John and Eliza Rand where on the marriage it states Albert and Martha Rand

England & Wales Christening Records, 1530-1906 about Thomas Richard Rand
Name: Thomas Richard Rand
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 10 Dec 1878
Christening Place: Milton near Gravesend, Kent, England
Father's Name: Richard John Rand
Mother's name: Eliza

Sorry John, but why do you think he was christened in October. The above record states December.

From your reply 29 Jun 2014 21:08

'The christening of Thomas was 10th October 1878 Gravesend and not 10th December 1878 as stated so the November birthday is debatable, but then he may have thought his birthday as being November perhaps didn't have a birth cert. '

[EDIT: Actually, this could equally well be the Thomas Henry Rand born in Beckenham in 1878, who travelled a lot to and from Canada.]

Re Thomas Richard's marriage to Mabel in Vancouver 1903 -

I wonder if this can be him returning from a visit to UK?
The image says he's a labourer, born in Kent, hading for Vancouver.

Hi AG. Feel unsure if Thomas Richard returned home, could it be the Thomas Henry born Beckenham Kent you mentioned because Thomas Richard was born in Gravesend Kent. Looking at the marriage of Thomas Richard Rand to Mabel Rose Boyd in 1903 I think the marriage split up because Mabel Rand/Boyd married a Thomas Vovig and on her death in 1948 she was down as Mabel Rose Vevig. Looking again at the voyage back to Vancouver in March 1903 , Thomas Richard Rand was stated as being a Labourer on,his marriage to Mabel so it could be possible it his him. But being a labourer would he have been able to have afforded a return voyage in those days.

Re Alfred Frederick Rand, certainly the other brother, on the 1891 Uk census he was in a Dr Barnados home which would have been taken around April 1891 and the passage to Portland was in November 1891 and as I thought the children went from Portland to Canada. I wonder if Thomas Richard returned home to the Uk in 1903 to look for his brother Alfred
