Anthony Report 2 Jul 2014 23:46

Anyone have any suggestions as to why my great grandfather might have been known under both names?

He was born in Winkleigh, Devon in 1861 - as a Baker although there are also numerous Kellands in the same village. He was known as William Baker Kelland n many official documents but on the 1911 census he is a Baker (in Warrington, Cheshire). The Kelland addition is a bit of a mystery that my dad - now 88 - has pondered over for some time. :-S

Hi Anthony

Births Mar 1861 (>99%)
Baker William Torrington 5b 499

Do you know who his parents were at all Anthony.
Do you have his birth or marriage certificate to give us his parents names?

Ricochet Report 3 Jul 2014 08:32

Which name did he use when he married?

Who did he name as his father?

Do you have William's birth cert?

You refer to official documents; please say what they relate to

There is nothing for the name William Baker Kelland on freebmd or FMP

You ask why he used both names; illegitimacy is the obvious thought, but maybe you know that he wasn't.

If he'd been born out of wedlock to a Miss Baker, who later married a kelland, that could be one explanation

If it's of any relevance, Cheshire BMD, tells us they married St Paul's:

ANTROBUS Sarah A KELLAND William Warrington, St Paul Warrington

It looks as though Ancestry has included another family on the 1911, this is the FMP version which reflects the image more accurately:

By the way - welcome to the boards Anthony!

Could you tell us what information you have regarding other members of his family - e.g. his mother, siblings etc. that might help piece this together.

Thanks to all who have responded so far. Hopefully you will have received a direct reply to your inbox - if not message me and I will get back to you.

Think I've marked the thread as answered in error though

All very helpful info - some I already had -

I have official papers i.e. registering birth of his daughter (my nan) showing him as William Kelland and her as Annie Maria Kelland - though later records show them all as Baker. Also my nan's marriage lines have him as Wm Baker Kelland.

All very confusing - any further help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated

His name on his daughter's marriage cert is not exactly 'official' That is merely the name someone gave for him at the time.

He did not marry using a second forename.

His children were registered as kelland, a name which at least one used all his life.

WHO was his father? If he knew him, his name will be one the 1888 marriage cert. That piece of info is crucial

The JFM 1861 birth is actually too early for the ages he gives on the censuses above

When and where did William die? and under which name?
