I am trying to find Hugh Ross b, 1849 at Edinburgh, we believe he may have emigrated to Canada around 1881, Hugh,s mother was Mary & her second marriage was to John Donald in 1852 and sometimes Hugh was entered as Hugh Donald Ross. Can any kind person help with any information. Thank you.

So the William Ross in the 1851 census already posted was perhaps Mary's brother-in-law , but mistranscribed as her husband, and she was already widowed.

I don't find them on the 1/6/1880 US census, nor the 4/4/1881 Canadian one.
Agnes says on both the 1900 & 1910 censuses they immig 1880, evidently after early June.

Edinburgh 1831, I have found him up till 1871 living with his sister Catherine (b. 1823) they were living at 15, New Bakers Land St Cuthbert Edinburgh. after that date I cannot find him at all, have you any idea where I maybe could find what happened to him after 1871?

This is him in 1871, which you have already found. Some mistranscription in this Ancestry version.

It implies Catherine was his daughter, not his sister, although that must be another mistranscription, judging by their ages.

He's a soldier in 1871, so could have been away with his regiment in later years?

There's this death on SP (I think both records are for the same death). Wrong part of Edinburgh, but you never know.
It's the only William Ross death in Midlothian 1871-1881, of the right age

I wonder if this is him? He was a bookbinder, enlisted in Gravesend, Kent in 1860. Arrived in India in 1863 and was treated quite a few times for the effects of malaria.
His medical record seems to read :Parkhurst? 6.2.71 (when he arrived) revaccinated 21 April 1871 then Aldershot? 25.6.72 (when he arrived) conjunctivitis between 9 Oct and 12 Nov 1872. He had completed 12 years service.
He was discharged in 1875 in Devonport. He was unfit due to impaired vision.
