Thanks Gritty. We have had contact with Priscilla's family but as I think was so often the case, family matters weren't really discussed. I shall order the certificates as suggested.
Thank you.

I'm with Flip- I'd start with the death certificates for Georgina and Charles W. and hopefully the one for Charles will shed light on any marriage/ children.

Did you make contact with descendants of Priscilla- it seems she had at least one son. I wondered if he/ or his family knew of any possible cousins?

Thanks Flip, I've just got my head around it all and will attempt to contact those in here that mention Robert in their personal family trees next. Lots of great information, it all seems to make sense doesn't it.

Thank you everyone, very grateful for your time and help. Will keep you posted.

I would be fairly comfortable with the deaths of Georgina May and Charles William, their dob match the father's military record. Maybe get their marriage certificates first to confirm they have the right father and, if so, you will get the age and marital status of their spouse? Then do a bit more digging.

There are no obvious children for Harry/Georgina Smith, but Charles may have the 2 posted - although where they went after Robert's marriage is still a mystery. There's no sign of any children for Robert and wife either.

The death certificates will give the informant, but if we have the right Charles his wife out-lived him so will possibly be the informant. We have no idea of Harry's age so don't know when he died.

But, if money is no object, buy the lot

:-D

Thank you so much everyone, I can't believe how kind you all are to help us in this way. I don't have time to read it all in detail now for a couple of days as we have visitors but will do so ASAP. One more question, my next step, is that to order birth, marriage and death certificates to get some proof?
Thank you again, I would never have got anywhere near all that information without you, I know one elderly lady that could be very happy with any results I may find.

Her sister Lucy Regina Roberts, born 31/8/1908 (same place) married Eric William Enid O'sullivan 10/5/1926 in Bankipore. They were also living in Croydon in 1963/5, but she died in Bromley.

Can't see a marriage in India (familysearch) for Dorothy/Margaret to a Murray though.

So, if the this is the same couple as the parents of the children posted by Choccy, then she had to have been married before to have the mn Roberts.

Can't see a marriage for a Dorothy roberts to a Murray though in E/Wales

Do those overseas marriages give any indication of the spouse Choccy?

Flip Report 27 Aug 2014 12:40

There's also this death in same area Charles died - could be connected:

Dorothy Margaret Vince
Birth Date:29 Jan 1906
Date of Registration:Feb 1997
Age at Death:91
Registration district:Worthing
Inferred County:West Sussex
Register Number:4B11C
District and Subdistrict:7864B
Entry Number:214

IF connected, that would make her a bit older than Charles, and could have had a 19 year old child........but like I say speculation.

A Robert and Charles both have trees with the above-named (born in India). You could try contacting them (if they are still members).

A Charles W Vince married in Putna, India in 1941 (British Nationals Armed Forces marriages 1796-2005)

FMP has 2 children born (registered) in Singapore, mother's maiden name Roberts

Robert L P born 1943 and Charles Wm F born 1946

There is a marriage for Robert in Croydon in 1968

Pure speculation, but I wonder?????

Bearing mind his father enlisted again after the war, wonder if this could be him:

Lieutenant C Vince
Port of Departure:Bombay, India
Arrival Date:29 Jul 1947
Port of Arrival:Southampton, England
Ports of Voyage:Bombay
Ship Name:Empire Windrush
Search Ship Database:
Search the 'Empire Windrush' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Shipping line:New Zealand Shipping Company Ltd
Official Number:181561

Service number BC/16506 (IAOC), travelling with Mrs D Vince and 6 children but the problem is oldest is 19, then 17, 15,13 then a gap to the other 2 age 3 & 1. Maybe the older children were hers from a previous marriage?

A 3 year old would have become eligible to vote in 1965.

Flip

Flip Report 27 Aug 2014 08:56

Also in Croydon in 1963 (54 Alton Road) was a Charles W Vince, and Dorothy M Vince. They are still at same address in 1965 along with Robert L P Vince. Robert was registered as "Y" - denoting he was not eligible to vote in elections prior to 1/10/1965.

These may be unconnected, but I can't see a birth for Robert, nor a marriage for Charles & Dorothy - could they have been abroad??

Flip

Flip Report 27 Aug 2014 08:39

The 1963 ER for 116d Bensham Manor Rd (posted by Penny) has Georgina M Vince and Charles F Vince, not Charles W. So her husband, not son.

They appear to have moved to 5 Tilford Avenue, in 1963 and were still there in 1965, so I don't think this gives a lead on the son Charles william.

According to that military record, Charles Frederick Vince gave a birth date of 24/8/1892 - he died in Croydon in 1969 confirming this dob.

The record also gives dob for Charles William of 20/2/1915 - which confirms the death already posted. Priscilla Gertrude was born 19/12/1920.

Thank you so much Penny and Choccy. Of course, I had just assumed siblings living together, but Charles living with his mother makes much more sense, and I think the Georgina in Yorkshire is very likely. I hadn't realised that a child born in December 1913 would be registered in 1914, so that may have made my search more difficult.

Thank you for your help, it really is invaluable. I am waiting to hear back from local records offices in Yorkshire and Worthing, although I fear that will take a while. Will contact the local papers too for obituary notices as I found one for Priscilla Gertrude (their sister) which was very useful. I am keen to see if either Charles or Georgina had any children that may still be alive and possibly able to answer some questions for us.
