My great Grandmother Delphine used to live with an Alice E Piggott but I believe Alice was married to Henry Piggott in 1900. They lived at 1 Hamburgh Place, Sydenham. Not sure if the same lady you are looking for who may have remarried. She is a witness on my GG mothers wedding certificate along with a D Causley.

1 Hamburgh Place where Alice E Piggott lived with my GG Grandmother was linked to a Methodist church in Sydenham and I believe that single Mothers or those without financial means lived. As well as my GG Mothers child Arthur Frank Stark there were some other children living there.
By the 1901 census I think my GGranmother had moved but Alice was still living there as a wet nurse I am led to believe. May be the AlicecE Piggott you are looking for so have sent a PM. :-)

Lucy Report 29 Nov 2015 00:12

Forgot to mention my GG Grandmother was a bit of a character too an worked as a ladies maid then a wet nurse in the London area.

Henry Piggott's parents came to Sydenham in about 1847 and by 1861 (when Henry was 7) they were at 6 Hamburgh Place. Henry was at no.2 in 1891, but by 1894 he was at no.1. He died there in 1926 and Alice was sill at number up until at least 1939 I believe. I am not sure if she ever married Henry.

Hi Lucy,
Thank you so much for contacting me about Alice Piggott. Sadly, I don't see how it could be my Alice as mine was married to James Piggott and not Henry, otherwise it would have been quite feasible. The good thing is, it is probably one more Alice E. Piggott to eliminate!
Thank you so much again for taking the trouble to contact me.
Regards June

Yes I can see now that the marriage to James Kennett Piggott was in 1888, Holborn which spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Middlesex; ;-)

Lucy Report 2 Dec 2015 17:05

Strange though as I cannot find a marriage on the freebmd website at anytime between Alice E ?? and Henry Piggott.

Just to add, Alice I have was also at 1 Hamburgh Place 1911, with Tom Starkes age 13, as Thos Sparkes age 3, 1901)

Good luck with research on your Alice E Piggott as you say probably just a coincidence. If you need a signature of the Alice E Piggott I have just to eliminate for certain, I have a copy.
:-)

Just to add that there is an electoral register showing your James Kennett Piggott on familysearch.org.uk. He was living at 2 Downshire Hill in 1894 & 1895 as shown on the electoral registers in the borough of Hamstead. Dwelling house (service)

1939 register has an Alice E Piggott born in 1868 but in Thurrock U.D rather than Islington.

Hi Lucy,
I have not been able to open the signature - is it meant to be in the little envelope? It's a brilliant idea as I will be able to match it with the one on her wedding certificate. It is interesting that you found James still living at 2 Downshire Hill - he was there for the 1891 census but by 1901 he was living at 99 Fernhead Road, Paddington, London.
Hopefully I will be able to see the signature if not I could give you my email. :-)

Could she have remarried a Harry Russel Thatcher rather than Mr Whitehouse in 1898? There is an Alice Thatcher born 1868 and living in Hampstead on the 1901 census but can't view census to see who the husband is.

But may rule out Harry Russell Thatcher depending if the following is correct
http://www.home-computer.co.uk/gedpage/fam/fam00141.htm
So back to where was Alice Emily Piggott in 1901/1911?

My guess is she was living with another man and faked her name!
:-D

Hi Lucy,
I remember checking out Thomas Henry Whitehouse, and his Alice Emily and he was not the correct one as the birth date and place did not tally with my Alice. It is so frustrating, I just feel she is out there somewhere, but I agree with you I think she just lived with someone else after James and took their surname.
Thank you so much for all your interest, I really, really appreciate it. :-D

Was the last known address the Chalford Road, Islington address where she lived as you have said with her son Alexander. What was the house number and have you searched for this on census returns and electoral registers to see how long they stayed. If the house is still in existance there may he deeds which have information.

Here is Claude James Kennett Piggotts grave. It is in Wandsworth cemetry and he was buried with Emily Maria Brown and Henry Charles Brown who were probably his in laws as his wife was Nellie Brown

http://billiongraves.com/record/Claude-James-Kennett-Piggott/804875#given_names=Claude&family_names=Piggott

But no mention of his Mother Alice so the mystery is still not solved.

Hi Lucy,
Yes, I have those deaths and a picture of the grave and yes, they were the in laws.
I shall check the electoral registers for Chalfont Road Islington - can you search by place do you know or only by persons name? I don't have a sub to Find my Past at the moment.
Best wishes :-)

Have you thought Alice could have been listed as a missing person if she went to help in the Boer war. Nothing conclusive from my search though.

Hi Lucy,
Thank you so much for the link - what fascinating reading and maybe Alice was a suffragette which would explain why she is not on the 1911. It really is all about lateral thinking isn't it. I still feel deep down she probably just moved in with someone and took his surname though, but it's certainly food for thought. I am extremely grateful for all your imput.
Regards June :-)
