Hi thank you loads for help, found button my threads lol.
Have everything on his life, but death as he went out to get cigarettes, never returned, his wife remarried after 1916. Haven't found him in 1911 census. On his son's wedding says born Scotland & on his wedding 1892, but given up on them after massive search. Will keep trying to find death for a while longer. Still not sure if fib about Scottish birth, but did find possible match in Scotland 1881 and still keeping as mine.
Shame not mine his wife was Jessie chambers

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 23 Sep 2014 15:29

Where was he living when he went for cigs, and what year was that?

As his wife re-married she would have had to have him declared legally dead, which cannot be done until a person has been missing for seven years

Unless, of course, she lied on the second marriage cert, or there is a death cert for him

When was he born?

WHERE did he marry?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 23 Sep 2014 15:29

Hello dogsB - he claims to be born 1892 on his marriage, have I read that right?

But you're claiming an 1881 birth as his? Hmmm

What was his occupation, and his father's name and occupation on his marriage?

Ah, this is the marriage (no middle name for him)

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
Name: Alfred Ritchie - a labourer
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871
Age: 21
Spouse: Jessie Chambers
Spouse Age: 19
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 28 Feb 1892
Parish: Holy Trinity, Woolwich
Borough: Greenwich
Father Name: James Ritchie - a slater
Register Type: Parish Register

Neither previously married. Both give address as 41 Rope Yard Rails.

Jessie's father unknown as she is apparently an orphan.

Witnesses: William Henry Casser? and Frederick Thomas Street.

So there's no way an 1881 birth is him :-)

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 23 Sep 2014 15:32

If he was born 1892, he couldn't have married much before 1908

Who was the son you refer to?

Where did he marry?

Which country's marriage certs record the birthplace of the fathers of the couple marrying?

ADDED

Birthplaces are not on English marriage certs, which is where both Alfreds married

So... - for reference - this would be him in 1901:

Who did Jessie marry 'after 1916'?

I can't see any marriage for a Jessie Ritchie without a second initial before 1923, other than one in Gateshead, which seems unlikely

The son seems to have married in 1916

Where were Jessie and the son in 1911?

The 1892 marriage has NO second names for either of the couple, so please tell us why you think they have any?

And please answer the question about the whereabouts of Jessie and son in 1911...........

It's important

Thanks Choccy

So how is that thought to be Jessie RITCHIE?

Flip

Flip Report 23 Sep 2014 16:55

The father Alfred's occupation was labourer in arsenel on both children's christenings - on the 1891 census (born Glasgow) he was a labourer (GL) not a slater. I would be pretty sure it is him - address is a boarding house 11 Rope Yard ? - both their addresses were Rope Yard at the time of their marriage.

On both christenings she is recorded as Jessie Emma Ritchie, and I think she was born 1873 Redhills, Reigate Surrey. in 1881 she was living in Brighton - a neice of Corneleus John Hilland, so if that was where she was brought up she may have put that as place of birth.
