My great grandfather Christopher Faithful or possibly William Christopher Faithful born circa 1871 appears in the 1901 census as being born in East Indies. In the 1911 census he is called William C Faithful and is recorded as being in The Convict Prison Princetown Dartmoor. I can find what I think is his death certificate, which has him recorded as Christopher W Faithful, which records his death in Lewisham in 1915.
I can't find any record of movement back to UK or any details of why he was in prison. I know his father was a James Faithful which has come from his marriage certificate which shows Christopher marrying a Martha Wellard in 1896. James Faithfull, Christopher's fathers occupation as recorded on the marriage certificate was as a Jeweller.
It would be good to find some information about Christopher's father James and what were the circumstances of Christopher's birth in India.
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas of how to proceed. I know the Prison records for Dartmoor were destroyed in a fire.

It must be the wrong one, I think that census is for William Conrad Faithful - registered in India under military records.

THat's why I asked about the occupation....I don't think the 1907 one is him. He is a serial horsestealer under various names and psuedonyms. And he appears to have been in prison from about 1893 whic

Flip

Flip Report 5 Oct 2014 13:46

Not sure I agree with you Jude, if you look at the 1902 conviction he is a bricklayer - and the details tally with the full conviction list in 1907.

22/10/1891 given 12m for horse stealing, under the name Charles Davis
4/4/1893 given 16m for house breaking under name James Gardner
7/1/1897 5 yr + 2 yr police supervision for horse stealing (using Christopher Faithful)
3/7/1902 3 yr + 2 yr police supervision for horse stealing (Croydon court)
10/7/02 5 yr, concurrent with above (Maidstone assizes).
23/11/1907 7 yr + 3 yr supervision. (Now a carman)

Added: Although I agree, where did he find the time to marry & have kids :-D

Flip

Flip Report 5 Oct 2014 13:53

This does cast some doubts as to his real name and place of birth, and whether he invented the father James. What would a jeweller be doing in India - he obviously wasn't military otherwise the birth would be coming up on FMP.

If the first recorded offence is him, then I wonder if that was his original name??

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 5 Oct 2014 14:08

Yes one wonders whether it was indeed his real name.......
