You should search for Dennis again next Xmas
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/search.aspx
By then his service record will probably be online, rather than just his attestation papers - see:

Happy New Year to you alviegal. Yes the 2 other children remain a mystery, perhaps she had stillborn twins at some stage. Given Gertrude's age she could have had a couple more around the turn of the century!

alviegal

alviegal Report 1 Jan 2015 19:56

You and your cousin are both very welcome. Have a good New Year. Shame we haven't found the other 2 births though :-(

Thank you all so much once again, you have all been fantastic with your efforts in researching this family on behalf of my cousin. She is so chuffed!

Ah, I did look for that but it appears the ones I posted are on page 30 and the rest follow on page 35. Well done Thelma.

She must have been a very strong woman. It has been a very sad story so far.

A tree on ancestry has this for Leonard jnr.

Leonard William W Quicke
Birth 1882 in EXETER Devon England
Death in Eshowe, South Africa

Reginald Cecil Quicke
Birth 5 OCT 1883 in EXETER Devon England
Death 5 JUL 1959 in Southampton

Denis Charles Quicke
Birth 29 AUG 1885 in EXETER Devon England
Death 16 NOV 1942 in Toronto,Canada

Florence Florence Madeline Quicke
Birth 29 JUL 1897 in HIGHWORTH Wiltshire England
Death (07061963) in Harare, Zimbabwe

There is no evidence for any of this.

Travelman

Travelman Report 1 Jan 2015 17:04

Yes, surely she had baby Harold Eugene with her when she sailed back to England as he was born in Albany? Poor Gertrude must have been pregnant when she sailed to the USA or got pregnant soon after!

alviegal

alviegal Report 1 Jan 2015 16:48

Here she is returning in 1896 with Cecil 12, Dennis 9, Alfred 6. Wonder where the other children are?

Oh Alviegal how terribly sad this family story has become, but thank you so much for your efforts.

It also looks very much as if Leonard did commit suicide :-(

As a coincidence, Denis left my Great Aunt with small children in the USA. My cousins Dad did not see her father after the age of 5.

alviegal

alviegal Report 1 Jan 2015 16:31

Here she is again, I think. She is travelling with Miss FM Quick, 23, a dressmaker.

Bravo Gertrude, you seem to have improved your life!!

Oh!, poor Gertrude

alviegal

alviegal Report 1 Jan 2015 16:26

Sorry, missed your comments whilst typing but I would think it's the same person. I'm surprised she went back to her husband when they arrived back in England but I suppose with all those children she didn't have much of a choice. Poor woman.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 1 Jan 2015 16:18

I think Alviegal is on to something there. (Post above now added to which confirms)

The census shows Gertrude as born Exeter and also Leonard seemed to return alone.

Thanks Gritty that sounds like him. Not sure about that one alviegal, but I appreciate you looking.
