I am trying to trace William Peatman, born 1840 Lincoln. I have him on the 1851 census living with his grandparents Thomas & Elizabeth Peatman @ Long Bennington. I also have a baptism at Lincoln St Nicholas in Newport, Lincoln, parents stated as John & Anne, which fits with place of birth on the 1851 census. Whilst John is a son of Thomas & Elizabeth, William is not listed with either John & Ann or Thomas & Elizabeth in 1841, both coupleswere resident Long Bennington at that time. I can't find any other trace of him,a part from a possible BMD entry for Q1 @ Lincoln.

This is the only William Peatman I an see which fits with what you say in 1851.
Perhaps you are wrong in thinking that John and Anne are his parents?

As Long Bennington fall in the Newark Registration district maybe this is his birth registration

Name: William Peatman
Event Type: Birth Registration
Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration Year: 1841
Registration District: Newark
County: Nottinghamshire
Event Place: Newark, Nottinghamshire, England
Volume: 15

Which would explain why he wasn't with his parents in 1841. He hadn't been born.

Just in case the Joseph and Maria, in the 1851 census posted above, are his parents, here's their marriage:

is the 1851 I posted the same one you have found?

Thnaks both, these are the 2 entries I have. I have a suspicion that John & Ann have recorded themselves as parents at the baptism when they are not. I am also dubious that he is the son on Joseph & Maria, as Joseph would have only been 16 when William was conceived.

Investing in the birth cert would probably be a good idea

Have you looked to see if William was with Anne's parents in 1841?

Julie

Julie Report 2 Jan 2015 17:03

Thanks all, some of the information about John & Ann, & Joseph & Maria, is detail I hadn't turned up yet so will be useful. William does seem to be a bit of a mystery.

Julie

Julie Report 2 Jan 2015 17:11

Some of you were posting whilst I was putting the last reply together. I haven't looked for William with his other grandparents, in fact I don't even have parents for Ann yet. I did think about the birth cert, but if John & Ann were prepared to pass themselves off as parents for the baptism, they may well have also reg'd the birth on that basis. The Quebec census entry is interesting as an earlier Peatman was in Montreal for many years & I note that Elizabeth daughter of Joseph & Maria is shown as born in Canada.

Ann's father's name was John:

(wondering about above, fits with Baptisms, John Burial, but obviously not Ann Burial 1846)

Julie Report 2 Jan 2015 17:33

Thanks ArgyllGran, I had just found the marriage on the Lincs Marriages database myself & started looking for John. For some reason I had the marriage as being at Long Bennington when it clearly was not. This perhaps makes the baptism in Lincoln a bit more credible as a child of John & Ann, but still doesn'ty explain where William was in 1841.

Julie

Julie Report 2 Jan 2015 17:36

Chris, yes the marriage of Ann followng the death of John does fit. The burial in 1846 is actually John's sister Ann rather than his wife.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 Jan 2015 17:53

As William was christened in the church of St Nicholas in Newport, Lincoln, I would hazard a guess that these might be Ann's parents in 1841 - in which case he's not with them, either:

ArgyllGran - census data consistently indicates Ann was born 1818, so this may be her parents, albeit Mary would have been quite young when she conceived. As you say it still doesn't locate William in 1841.
