Ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so Mary could have been anything up to 44 in 1841.
John's age is transcribed as 49, but it's actually 40 n the image.

ArgyllGran, thanks for the clarification about the age mistranscription, I have come across 1841 census data with adult ages not rounded. I have located a John & Mary Coulson at North Carlton, given as place of birth for Ann, by way of some baptisms at the local parish church, no Ann, but the non-conformist bapt you found at Market Rasen could relate. The couple could have also migrated into Lincoln by 1841.

just wondered if william was born to maria out of wedlock as maria and joseph were not married and i found a birth for a william savage 1840 and that was maria's maiden name born in lincolnshire and then she changed his name for the christening because she was not married and john and ann said they were the parents perhaps you might find him in the census under savage

There are a couple of William Savages born in Lincoln c1840, in the 1841 census, but without knowing the names of possible relatives/maternal grandparents, it's impossible to say if any of them are him.

Thanks for the additional info, which I will follow up. I think William may indeed have gone to Canada. His uncle was already in Montreal & I have traced some other census entries in that city consistent with him. If correct he went to Canada in 1852, which although he would only have been 12 is possible, given that his uncle was there. I haven't attempted to trace anyone in Canada before so I am feeling my way round to find sources of info.

I think you also have to consider the two William Peatman deaths in Newark Registration district in 1853 and 1856

Chris/Astra, the William in the 1853 death is the son of Jesse, who is in fact from the Long Bennington Peatmans. Likewise the 1856 death is another William, this time an older adult male, is also a member from the same Peatmans. Many of the Peatmans lived in the Newark registration district although they were in Lincolnshire.

ArgyllGran, having had a look at the 1841 census entries, they relate to locations in the fenland area of the county i.e. South East, rather than North West where Long Bennington is situated, so I don't think they are related. It struck me that if Maria was the mother, William might have been with her parents in 1841, but I have yet to trace who they were. I do have a William & Maria at Halloughton where Maria was supposedly born, but have found them on the 1841 census simply as a couple.
