Find Ancestors

I am looking for John and Alice Gray who were living in Lincoln in 1901. John was born 1874 in Lincolnshire and alice was born in 1883 in Liverpool.

I am interested in finding the names of their children and if any had died.

Thank you for helping me. As far as I knew they only had two Leonard and John. However today I was looking through some parish records and it is possible that they had a child called Ethel. But she seems to have disappeared on the census. Ethel was born in 1901. She was baptised at St Faiths church Lincoln in 1901.

Did the 1911 census say that any of their children had died.?

The reason I know they were living in Lincoln in 1901 was because I was going through the baptism records from 1899 to 1911 on line.

If Ethel was born after 31 March she wouldn't be on the 1901 census.

Neither 1901 or 1911 cenus gives Alice's place of birth as Liverpool, so what makes you think that she was born there?

A tree on Ancestry says John Gray born 1877, Torksey married Alice Wiswould 2 Nov. 1898, Register Office, Lincoln. It has the marriage certificate. The tree however only has the 2 children Leonard & John.

The 1901 and 1911 for John and Alice look like my family. Not sure where Ethel fits in then. Maybe I will send for her birth cert and see what that shows.

Ethel is on another tree, born 17 July 1901, Lincoln, married William Wheatley 1922, Lincoln and died 1950 Lincoln. Someone had added this note to the tree.


"Auntie Ethel was know to the family as Meg. Her & Uncle Billy didn't have any children of their own, not sure if they couldn't or just didn't. They cared for & raised Robert 'Bob' Gray their newphew from John & Annie when he was born with an illness that caused brain damage & he was classed as mentally retarded"

I would think that she is probably staying with relatives in 1911 so you may have to look up all the relatives of John and Alice to see if she is with any of them. It's possible that she may have been noted under their name and not her own, or her age is incorrect ??

Thank you for those Baptism dates. I have managed to confirm these dates from the parish records yesterday evening.

I will look into the marriage of Ethel and William Wheatley. I had seen this yesterday on freeBMD but could not confirm whether it was mine or not. Looks as if it could be correct.

That information about Aunty Ethel was interesting. I will have to look into that.

I will also take a look at the 1911 census and see If I can find Ethel with another member of the family.
