Hi, It's late so it's possibly just a concentration problem more than anything but...
I have found a Rhoda Barnard (Born 1865 in Gloucestershire according to census) living with grandparents, Thomas & Mary Robert, in 1871 and I think she is a servant in 1881. She then married a William Knight and moved to Atherton in Lancashire.
My problem is that I can't seem to find a record of her being born in or around 1865.
Any advice gratefully received

According to Findmypast Rhoda's grandparent's surname is Probert rather than Robert.

Take note of the correct name for the grandparents, and then look for a marriage to Barnard. I assume you want to know who her parents were, without buying a cert

As has already been suggested, there may not be a birth record as there were no penalties for not registering a birth until 1875 so many people did not bother.

EDIT - don't think this Catherine Probert can be the daughter of Thomas and Mary Probert as if she was then she wouldn't be enough to be marrying in 1841.

unfortunately there isn't one

however I would say FMP's reading is correct and the grandparents' name is Probert (compare the R in Rhoda and the P in Parker in the same household)

edit - and that would fit with the Elizabeth Probert in the 1861 household

:-) I did find a Rhoda Barnard born in Forest of Dean but it was 1872, which is too late.. however now I know it's Probert and not Robert, I'll have a look into that... Thanks for your help Kath & Jacqueline

In the 1861 census the grandparents DO have a daughter called Elizabeth, so I would say that is a good possibility Joonie.

This census shows her as born Cinderford. Plump (birthplace as per 1891 census) is about ½ way between Mitcheldean and Cinderford.

For her to be granddaughter, the easiest explanation would be that a female Probert had married a male Barnard. The only one I can see is in 1841 in Crickhowell, Breconshire, Wales so couldn't be a daughter of Thomas and Mary.

She may have not been registered, there were no penalties for not doing so until the 1870's

EDIT - well late with this offering, reminds me to refresh before posting, but at least have had the same thoughts as others.

Greyghost - I think JoonieCloonie may possibly have already found the correct birth and marriage for the parents.
