UK, Lunacy Patients Admission Registers, 1846-1912

Name: Emma Booth
Gender: Female
Admission Date: 18 Jun 1910
Institution: Claybury
Intitution Place: Essex, England
Death Date: 21 Dec 1912<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Death Place: Essex, England

She died in Claybury Asylum

"The Asylum was built to accommodate 800 male and 1,200 female pauper lunatics, and had over 20 acres of floor space. The sexes were strictly segregated. On admission, each patient was examined and photographed. Male patients were issued with three suits of clothing - two for everyday working wear, that is, one for summer and one for winter, and one for Sundays - as well as an Inverness overcoat. The women had no specific uniform."

More at:

http://ezitis.myzen.co.uk/claybury.html

"Claybury Hospital was a psychiatric hospital at Woodford Bridge in Essex. It was opened in 1893 making it the fifth London County Council Asylum

Claybury was built from 1889-1893.The land was previously used for chickens. The architect was George Thomas Hine; Peter Cracknell describes it as the first Compact Arrow design. Situated on the brow of a hill, the site incorporated around 50 acres (200,000 m2) of ancient woodland and 95 acres (380,000 m2) of open parkland, ponds, pasture and historic gardens. These had been designed in 1789 by the landscape architect Sir Humphry Repton for the owner, James Hatch, of what was then called the Claybury Estate. "Claybury" was the name given to a fictitious village in the stories of W. W. Jacobs, but is generally thought to be based on nearby Loughton, where Jacobs lived.

From 1893 it was known as London County Lunatic Asylum, Ilford."

Ilford comes under Romford Reg District, so it seems pretty likely this is Emma Elizabeth. her admission date of June 1910, also explains why she was not with her family in census 1911 as posted earlier in the thread.

This seems to be the 1911 census entry for Emma Booth, in the Claybury Hospital/Asylum, which tallies with the record above, and with the information provided by other posters on the thread :

Name: E Booth
Age in 1911: 49
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862<<<<<<<<<<<
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Salisbury, Wiltshire<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Civil Parish: Ilford
County/Island: Essex
Country: England
Street address: London County Lunatie Ashlum, Claybury, Woodford Bridge, Essex<<<<<
Marital Status: MarrieD<<<<<<<<<<<
Registration district: Romford
Registration District Number: 191
Sub-registration district: Ilford
ED, institution, or vessel: 61-63
Household schedule number: 41

EDIT: on the 'infirmity' column on the census image it says "Lunatic at 44", which may give some indication as to how long her problems had been going on.

Most of the other patients also have the same "Lunatic at" followed by an age, which is not their age at time of the census. One person on the page is recorded as an imbecile.
