Find Ancestors

I am trying to find out what happened to William Robert Guest born to William and Elizabeth in Liverpool in 1867.

I've got his marriage details from Lancashite Parish Records and the details of the baptisms of three of his children (St Francis Xavier, Liverpool) including the one who died but I've not found the details for his first-born, Kathleen in 1897 at Liverpool.

William Robert is not with his family in the 1911 C (although his wife states 'married'). However I began to look for travel records and I think he's travelling to Africa on a few occasions - the last I've found is his arrival at Liverpool on 5 July 1911 from Africa.

On Canadian Passenger Lists: William Robert Guest deps Liverpool and arrives Quebec 1865 to 1935 and also an arrival from Quebec between 1919 and 1924 the latter has something called Form 30A next to it. I'm not sure whether this is William Robert born 1867 or his son, also William Robert Guest born on 15 December 1903.

Although I can see the African details, I can't see the Canadian passages' details. Can anyone help, please?

Yes, Margee; this is the son William Robert Guest. I wonder whether he stayed in Canada or was just there for a visit. He was Roman Catholic - we have a good mix of faiths in our family as well as people changing from Protestant to RC and vice versa!

Now I wonder whether Wm Rob't senior sent his son to 'toughen him up' although we have our fair share of wild ones in the family. William Robert Guest senior's sister (my great-grandmother) was by all account fairly wild!

AnnCardiff, although the age of 43 is right for William Robert senior, I don't think he emigrated to Canada as he always seemed to use both of his Christian names and I think he arrived back in Liverpool in July 1911 from Africa (where he seemed to be back and forth).

Could this possibly be his marriage in Toronto, lying about his age because wife was older?
He says his religion is Church of England. He's a confectioner, she's a bon-bon dipper. (That made me laugh, don't know why)

Yes, Margee, it's him lying about his age; he'd be 22, almost 23, really. I guess he was one of our family's only-slightly wild ones but Lord knows what he got up to in Canada if he was like my great-gran! His father was baptized in the C of E but because the children were baptized RC I guess Kathleen, the mother, was RC.

Incidentally, is a bon-bon dipper a person who dips the chewy sweets into flavoured sugar? Doesn't it conjure up images of pastel colours and summer?

West Derby's a Liverpool suburb. I've checked the RC baptisms at Lancashire Parish Records online as well as the Ormskirk church where William Robert Guest married Kathleen Buchanan.

It's funny I can't find her baptism record though. Maybe I'll take another look with closer eyes.

Update.

I found a gravestone online for William Robert Guest's wife, Flora Lavinia England died 1970; buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, York, Toronto, Ontario. It looks as though there's room on the stone for W R's name but no mention that he is buried there and I've not got a confirmed death for him.

It mentions nothing about mother on the stone so I'm guessing that they had no children.

This appears to be Kathleen's birth.

Yes, it is Kathleen.

She moved to Australia and lived with her youngest daughter at Paramatta, NSW after her daughter had been widowed after about three years of marriage to a George L G Tilford who died in 1928.

Margery (Kathleen's daughter) remarried (though I've not found a date in Australia) and moved to Melbourne where they lived with Kathleen. Kathleen died in 1949 there.

Margery, husband and child moved to the UK where Margery died.

Meanwhile I continue to look for a death of William Robert Guest (Kathleen''s son).

I am banking on him dying in Canada but perhaps, if he was on his own after his wife's death, there was nobody who knew his place and date of birth (which he falsified upon his marriage) and perhaps whoever reported his death knew him as only William Guest.

Still trying to find out what happened to William Robert Guest, born Dec 1903 in Liverpool who went to Canada where he married Flora Lavinia (Florence) England. She died in 1970 and is buried in Toronto's Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

I have come up with another death and gravestone in Alberta of a W R Guest who died in 1996 but it states he was born in 1907. He could have lied about his age again as it looks he may have married again. Buried with him is A Dorothy Guest who was born in 1907 and who died in 1990/1991.

I have looked on Ancestry but I don't have access worldwide. Can anyone help with the possible second marriage at all?

Maldon, that's him going to Canada.

The registration is actually West Derby, a district of Liverpool, England. I've tried suggesting to GR that they amalgamate the records for West Derby into Liverpool because of the danger of people thinking West Derby was in Derbyshire but they seem reluctant or unable to do so.

I know the area very well, having been born in Liverpool, but it's aggravating trying to chase up a relative who was born in Liverpool only to find that nothing shows - then you remember to try West Derby!

Have I been seeing things or has a post from Malyon (not Maldon) just been deleted?
