In 1911 census William and Margaret lived in Cheyne Walk and had 4 children listed Thomas, Dorothy, Patrick and Moira. First couple surnames spelt Gillan then it changed to Gillian.

I am anxious to find any information on William and Margaret. I cannot find birth certificates for any of the children or marriage certificate for William I am trying to find Margaret's maiden name but keep hitting brick walls can anyone help.

Thanks for info will try freebmd. I connect with them as great grand daughter my grandfather was Stanley Gillian who I had hoped to find on 1911 census but he wasnt there though through an insurance document he was named and living at that address in cheyne walk with Margaret and he was 5. So the plot thickens.

This has been most helpful and Stanley Gilian who died 1987 and married Ivy Bassett if my Grandfather.

I have found that it looks like the family in 1911 seemed to appear from nowhere but after this date I can find them on census records. Though if I have correct William he died in 1927 which would be correct according to my grandfather's marriage certificate who has him down as deceased.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 25 Mar 2015 10:29

There is no birth to match the data given on the death record............

Who witnessed Stanley's marriage?

Are you 100% certain that his birth name was Gillian or a variant thereof

If that was allegedly his family in 1911.......where was Stanley?

You refer to a document......what was its date?

greyghost

greyghost Report 25 Mar 2015 10:34

? you say they appear out of nowhere

Is that not William's birth Reg. in 1875 Chelsea - that would name his mother with her maiden name - right RD for 1911 census
and
is that not William in 1891 - occupation Porter as per 1911

I know the Death Reg, gives birth year as 1877, but age 50 Q1, the birth is more likely to be 1876 and then it's only a year out which is not unsurprising. Whoever registered the death can only give information as they know it.

1901 would make him old enough to be away in the Boer War for example

Other's at same address were:

The document referred to was an insurance document that my uncle found when my grandmother Ivy died. Also while by Grandad (Stanley) was in the Army my grandmother used to go round and help his mum (Margaret) out.

Stanley has always maintained that there was a problem with his birth certificate it got destroyed somehow this is what my uncle can remember him saying. Also when Moira died it was the police who came round to inform my Grandfather and he had to make the funeral arrangements.

I would agree also that William birth reg 1875 looks a match and yes it would be great if mother's maiden name mentioned but I thought that wasn't recorded until much later will have to send for certificate. I am ultimately looking though for his Wife Margaret's maiden name. On looking at the 1891 census I would think this was the same William.
