Sorry for disturbing everyone but this man has driven me insane by appearing aged 45 in the 1871 census and not apparently existing before that date. He is my great great grandfather and here is all the information I have.
He was a miller and grocer who lived at Lower Roughwood Mill in Hassall (near Alsager) in Cheshire. He was married to Eliza who was also born in 1826 but in Betchton. She was a dressmaker (I've seen photos of her daughter in some amazing frocks she created) but stopped in later years. They had four children. The oldest Levi Stonier b 1849, was a journeyman miller but he died in 1897. Then there was Emma born 1851, who worked in her father's grocer's shop, was my Great Grandma and married John Gorst. Then young Thomas Stonier born 1854, who also married a Gorst and finally Alfred Stonier born 1860. I have hunted round Odd Rode and Hassall for any clues but I just can't find anything about Thomas. I know the millers at Odd rode were called Stonier and he was a miller but still no link can I find. Please help me. I'm usually quite good at my family tree stuff but this is annoying. .

Last name: Stonier

This interesting surname is a variant of Stanier, which is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is occupational for a stonecutter, one who cut and dressed stone. The name is derived from the Middle English (1200 -1500) 'stanyer', from the Old English pre 7th Century 'stan', stone, and a reduced form of 'hewer', an agent derivative of 'hew(en)', to cut, chop, from the Old English 'heawan', assimilated to the agent suffix -(i)er. The name development since 1279 (see below) includes the following: Richard Stener (1379, Yorkshire), John Stonehewer (1605, Cheshire) and Nathaniell Stanyar (1689, Cheshire). The surname was more commonly known as Stonhewer in the mid to late 16th Century; the modern surname can be found as Stanier, Stanyer, Stonier and Stonhewer, and is found mainly in Staffordshire. Among the sample recordings in Staffordshire are the marriage of George Stonier and Ellen Wall on January 27th 1679 at Dilhorne, and the christening of Francis, son of Thomas and Anne Stonier, on September 10th 1737 at Wolstanton. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Thomas Stonhewar, which was dated 1279, The Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire, during the reign of King Edward 1, The Hammer of the Scots', 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

What kind and helpful people you all are. Thank you so much.
Thanks AnnCardiff, you have verified information for me and provided some extra places to look. I can't find a link with Stonehewers but it makes sense.
Thanks Yvonne, that gives me much more precise information.
Sorry, Jacqueline, I don't know Eliza's maiden name. Until about ten minutes ago this family appeared in 1871 completely ready made but thank you so much for finding them in 1861. That's a big leap forward and shows that spelling in the census could be dodgy!
Thanks so much everyone.
