Thanks again AnnCardiff. My plan this afternoon is to organise all this lovely research (although the shed needs painting) and combine it with my own. I had managed to trace my own surname back to 1600 but this bit of my family had just come to a halt. I am very grateful. My partner is now very jealous as his grandfather has proved even more elusive than a Stonier to find but perhaps I could do a "shout out" for him sometime. Thanks again to you and all the others who have helped me this weekend. ;-)

Thanks Yvonne but the Hickson link I think is the right one because of the Betchton link.
Thanks Chris I now have a whole new sapling from my tree thanks to you.
I'd better start going through this and making some notes!
My brother was given the name Stonier as his middle name and I'm looking forward to telling him where it came from and adding a few Hicksons to the story too.

OOOOH you all answer quicker than I can type.
Thanks again.
Jacqueline you are lovely, I now know so much thanks to you, I wondered if the Holbrooks Mill Stanyers could be related to my Stoniers and you have proved it.
AnnCardiff, thanks for all your hard work finding such useful facts. I used to live in Crewe and actually know the street that Alfred lived on!
Yvonee thanks for the baptism information, everything is suddenly falling into place.
Chris thanks for the Hickson information too, that was a complete hole for me.
Thanks again, I'm sure you all have better things to do than help me, I'm so grateful.

Thanks Chris I have trawled through Google without success over the last few weeks. I have had more progress thanks to everyone here. It's great. All I want to find at the moment is information about Thomas Stonier (1826) and his family pre 1871. Anything earlier than that is a bonus.
AnnCardiff, thank you for the surname information, I didn't know that at all.

What kind and helpful people you all are. Thank you so much.
Thanks AnnCardiff, you have verified information for me and provided some extra places to look. I can't find a link with Stonehewers but it makes sense.
Thanks Yvonne, that gives me much more precise information.
Sorry, Jacqueline, I don't know Eliza's maiden name. Until about ten minutes ago this family appeared in 1871 completely ready made but thank you so much for finding them in 1861. That's a big leap forward and shows that spelling in the census could be dodgy!
Thanks so much everyone.

Last name: Stonier

This interesting surname is a variant of Stanier, which is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is occupational for a stonecutter, one who cut and dressed stone. The name is derived from the Middle English (1200 -1500) 'stanyer', from the Old English pre 7th Century 'stan', stone, and a reduced form of 'hewer', an agent derivative of 'hew(en)', to cut, chop, from the Old English 'heawan', assimilated to the agent suffix -(i)er. The name development since 1279 (see below) includes the following: Richard Stener (1379, Yorkshire), John Stonehewer (1605, Cheshire) and Nathaniell Stanyar (1689, Cheshire). The surname was more commonly known as Stonhewer in the mid to late 16th Century; the modern surname can be found as Stanier, Stanyer, Stonier and Stonhewer, and is found mainly in Staffordshire. Among the sample recordings in Staffordshire are the marriage of George Stonier and Ellen Wall on January 27th 1679 at Dilhorne, and the christening of Francis, son of Thomas and Anne Stonier, on September 10th 1737 at Wolstanton. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Thomas Stonhewar, which was dated 1279, The Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire, during the reign of King Edward 1, The Hammer of the Scots', 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
