Not sure if this is connected to the 'James Hayhurst' mentioned in Stephen's will trancripts above:

Name: James Hayhurst
Spouse: Rebecca Atkinson
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 22 Dec 1785
Parish: Christ Church with St Mary and St Stephen, Spitalfields
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Register Type: Parish Register

One witness is a Jane Atkinson. James is described as a bachelor of ST Giles in the Fields, Rebecca a spinster otp. Married by licence.

Might be a complete red herring. However 'Long Acre' (mentioned as James' abode in Stephen's will) is an area in Westminster and I found the birth of two daughters, Jane and Jemima, to the couple in the Westminster area..

Name: Jane Hayhurst
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 17 Aug 1787
Christening Place: SAINT CLEMENT DANES,WESTMINSTER,LONDON,ENGLAND
Birth Date: 24 Jul 1787
Father's Name: James Hayhurst
Mother's Name: Rebecca
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C04160-3 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 574266, 574267 ,

Name: Jemima Hayhurst
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 26 Apr 1789
Christening Place: SAINT CLEMENT DANES,WESTMINSTER,LONDON,ENGLAND
Birth Date: 13 Apr 1789
Father's Name: James Hayhurst
Mother's Name: Rebecca
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C04160-3 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 574266, 574267

Howver 'Long Acre' might also be a rural location relating to Stephen's life in Scriven with Tenterhook.

Edit: This James died 1815:

Name: James Hayhurst
Probate Date: 3 Jun 1815
Residence: St Giles in the Fields, Middlesex, England

Will mentions wife Rebecca, but I'm struggling to read it, it does say he has a son named James Hayhurst though, who is probably the recipient of the £500 bequest from Stephen Atkinson.

Found this transcription for the will of Stephen Atkinson (brother to Thomas Atkinson, uncle to James Atkinson c1800)

I believe the '1918' is a mistranscription and should be 1818. In harriet's will Stephen is mentioned as formerly of Scriven with Tentergate Knaresbrough:

http://www.harrogatepeopleandplaces.info/wills/aa/052.htm

All my freehold estate in Scriven with Tentergate, Knaresborough, and Youlton, and the residue of my personal estate and effects to Thomas Sermitte.

HI,

Will send copy of the will of James Atkinson merchant, to you at the email address you gave me to send Harriet's will.

Harriet did mention James' will at the beginning of hers.

James is a merchant, mentions sons James, Stephen and THOMAS, and leaves various bequests to "Harriet the wife of my son Thomas". Quite a long will, and the writing is very closely written, so hope you have plenty of spare time!

Name: James Atkinson Esquire
Probate Date: 23 Aug 1809
Residence: London

EDIT: Burial record for James:

Name: James Atkinson
Burial Date: 14 Apr 1809
Parish: St Sepulchre, Holborn
County: London
Borough: City of London
Record Type: Burial
Register Type: Parish Register

Looks like he was buried in the 'Great Vault', and his address was given as Bedford Row. Aged 80 years, so gives you some idea of birthdate.

So much information to read through - I am feeling very overwhelmed

Maddie - I'd seen the ancestry tree, but as it has quite a few proven errors on a couple of generations I can't trust any of it, but thanks.

Safe, Jacqueline, Kucinta and Chris Ho - thank you so much, it will probably take me a week to read through it all

Have a great week everyone <3

????

This is EXTREMELY speculative based on Harriet Jones marrying in Barking, and being born c1772 if her age at death was correct.

Walthamstow and Barking are fairly close.

Name: Harriott Jones
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 17 Mar 1772
Christening Place: St. Marys, Walthamstow, Essex, England
Father's Name: James Jones
Mother's Name: Ann
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C16396-1 , System Origin: England-EASy , GS Film number: 1564135 , Reference ID: item 5 ,

We know Harriet had a sister named Ann, who had a James Jones as a witness at her marriage in 1799. However Ann was of the parish of Chislehurst at the time:

Name: Ann Jones
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 23 Jul 1767
Christening Place: St. Marys, Walthamstow, Essex, England
Father's Name: James Jones
Mother's Name: Ann
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C16396-1 , System Origin: England-EASy , GS Film number: 1564135 , Reference ID: item 4

Other births:

Name: Matilda Jones
Event Type: Christening
Event Date: 11 Mar 1775
Event Place: Barking, Essex, England
Gender: Female
Father's Name: James Jones
Mother's Name: Ann

Name: Henry Salkeld Jones
Event Type: Christening
Event Date: 01 Jul 1773
Event Place: Barking, Essex, England
Gender: Male
Father's Name: James Jones
Mother's Name: Ann
GS Film Number: 1471843 , Digital Folder Number: 004047856 , Image Number: 00296

Name: Sarah Jones
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 09 Feb 1769
Christening Place: St. Marys, Walthamstow, Essex, England
Father's Name: James Jones
Mother's Name: Ann
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C16396-1 , System Origin: England-EASy , GS Film number: 1564135 , Reference ID: item 5

It looks like the baptisms start out at Walthamstow, then move to Barking if looked at chronologically.

BUT, Jones is so common a name, and, as Jacqueline said earlier, Essex is not the easiest county to work with where records are concerned, so this might be a complete red herring, and I can't see a way at the moment to substantiate it.

One of the witnesses on the codicil to Harriet Atkinson's will, was one Juliet Susannah Atkinson.

I think she was the wife/widow of Thomas & Harriet's son Septimus Edward Atkinson.

Looks like they married in India:

On the image of the marrige register, the name Septimus Edward Atkin fills one line, and 'son' is on the next line, Calcutta, gentleman. Juliet is also of Calcutta, a spinster.

They lost at least one child there:

Wondering whether James Atkinson and wife Elizabeth named their son Septimus Edward after James' brother: in Harriet's will, there is a codicil mentioning that her son Septimus Edward (James' brother?) had died.

The Harriet who died Fenchurch street 1836, had sons named Stephen Thomas, JAMES, Charles, Septimus Edward and Frederick (?), and daughters named Harriet, Emily Ann, Caroline and Matilda.

There certainly seems to be sums of thousands of pounds involved, and she mentions annuities.

She mentions her late husband THOMAS Atkinson.

There is quite a lot to the will, and although legible, it might take a while to read, and it mentions other wills, so I'm not sure if any of her children had already predeceased her.

Name: Harriet Atkinson
Probate Date: 21 Jun 1836
Residence: London

One of the Ancestry trees has an image for the 1873 NSW death cert for James Atkinson, aged 73 years.

On that, the parents of James Atkinson, gentleman, are recorded as Thomas Atkinson, gentleman, and Emma Jones.

His birthplace is recorded as Essex, it confirms his marriage to Elizabeth Brown, and states there are 5 sons and 3 daughters living, and one son deceased.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 21 Apr 2015 16:52

Probably doesn't help, but at the time of the marriage (by licence) James Atkinson was a bachelor of the parish of St Catherine (sic) Coleman, London.

One of the witnesses was a Harriet Atkinson, probably a relative.

I can't find a baptism for James at St Katherine Coleman, and he may well have moved there at some time between birth and marriage.

There was one for a Harriet Atkinson, but I have no idea if she is the one who was a witness at the wedding:

Name: Harriet Atkinson
Baptism Date: 18 Feb 1798
Parish: St Katherine Coleman
County: London
Borough: City of London
Parent(s): Thomas Atkinson,
Harriet Atkinson
Record Type: Christening
Register Type: Parish Register

There was also a George and Sarah Atkinson baptising a couple of children at St Katherine's, but no son James, and no idea if any connection as Atkinson is not an uncommon name:

Name: Caroline Atkinson
Baptism Date: 6 Jan 1808
Parish: St Katherine Coleman
County: London
Borough: City of London
Parent(s): George Atkinson,
Sarah Atkinson
Record Type: Baptism
Register Type: Parish Register

Name: Charles Page Atkinson
Baptism Date: 25 Dec 1809
Parish: St Katherine Coleman
County: London
Borough: City of London
Parent(s): George Atkinson,
Sarah Atkinson
Record Type: Baptism
Register Type: Parish Register

EDIT: Neither set of parents matches the parents on the death on the Ancestry tree that Maddie posted.
