My Gt aunt Margaret Mckenna, married a John Joseph Curran on 22nd July 1918 at St Georges Church Manchester. On the certificate he is down as being aged 22 years ,Bachelor, Profession is Private in R.W.F. (I presume this to be Royal Welch Fusiliers) and his home address was given as 6 Lavender St, Miles Platting, Manchester, and his father was also called John Curran and employed as a chemical worker; Margaret was living with her family at 15 Providence St. And that's all I have! I cannot find a 'concrete' birth although there are a few other John D, or F currans about. On the 1911 census, living at Margarets parents house is a Kate Curran aged 5?7, but down as married with no children - I initially wondered if she was John Joseph's mother? I have looked at war records but cannot find him there either (I have emailed the RWF but await their reply). I do not know what happened to them and my late mother never really mentioned them either although she once referred to an Uncle John who went to live for a while in ? South Africa. Anyone got any ideas of where I go next?

Thanks Jacqueline, I will certainly keep them - I literally have no more than what I have written. And as ever, it is not an uncommon name! I have noted several Irish Currans on various census and the area in Manchester where they lived had a lot of Irish people living there (including Margaret's father, Edward McKenna) so I wondered if he was as well? Thanks for your kind suggestions, anyway.

When and where did Margaret and John die?

Eunice

Eunice Report 6 Jun 2015 23:32

I have no ides when they died Jacqueline. Interestingly, I saw on FREE BMD a john Curran died in Dec1937 and a Margaret Curran also died Dec 1937, but if this was them and they had died in an accident or something, I am sure my mum would have known and mentioned it? :-0

Just in case this connects - the 1937 death seems to be this Margaret and an Alice McKenna was later buried with her in the same grave:

A John Curran was buried on 23/10/1937 and the details of those in his grave are:

Cemetery Section Grave Position Deceased
Southern Cemetery TConsecrated 2205 1 John Curran buried 23/10/1937
Southern Cemetery TConsecrated 2205 2 Eda Harold buried 12/05/1949
Southern Cemetery TConsecrated 2205 3 John Curran buried 23/12/1961
Southern Cemetery TConsecrated 2205 4 Edith Curran buried 24/12/1981

The grave numbers for both are consecutive - I don't know if this means that they were buried side by side or if it is just because they were around the same date??

Oh my goodness you have all been busy! Thank you all so much, I shall have to investigate some of these! Kucinta, that seems very likely so I will follow that, as does all the burial things in Manchester's Southern cemetery - yes Dea, that Alice Mckenna, wife of Edward, died at home in Dale Street December 1950 so it looks like you have found a link there too. I have Alice's death cert, so will get Margarets first and then see where that leads me. Thank you all so very much xxxx
