Hi, I am looking fo info on George Parker and his wife Mary Holmes and wonder if anyone could help as I am up against that brick wall!

George Parker b 1862 Penge, Surrey was the oldest child of John Parker and Emily Harriet Pack.

Father - John Parker was born in 1838/9 in Bromley, Kent ( next door to Penge where george was born.

Mother - Emily Harriet Pack was born in 1842 in New York - neither her parents James or Ruth Pack were from the US and Emily was the 2nd child of 8 and the only one to be born overseas - any info on the family's time in New York would be great.

George Parker married Mary Holmes and they had 7 daughters. They emigrated to Ontario in 1908 but I dont know if the children were born in England or in the Canada. I cant find a marriage for George and Mary anywhere in the uk so any info would be good please.

I dont know anything about Mary Holmes, where she was born or her parents which would help in looking for her.

One of the Parker daughters was Dorothy Eulalie Parker who married in Kenora, Ontario.

Another name I have been given ( dont know where she fits in yet ) is Victoria May Parker also born in Canada but as she is someones grandmother I am trying to work out if George had a son - just ot my confused head on.

If anyone could help in at least finding George and Mary's marriage i would be very grateful and any info on their whereabouts once in Ontario.

It could be possible that George ended up in America where his mother was born - any info would be wonderful

Thanks alot

Rosie Lee

Just one more daughter to find !

Rosie

Rosie Report 4 Aug 2015 09:18

Looking at Florence - Kenora as a middle name seems to suggest that there is already a conection with Kenora, Ontario dont you think?

That being the case, had George or Marie or both lived in Canada before the children were born or could it be to do with Georges mother Emily Harriet Pack who was born in new york - i know its not Canada but maybe a connection there somehwere. Or ---- did any of George's siblings emigrate first ?

You have in the opening post that George was born 1862, but the 1901 census would suggest he was born later.

Is this his baptism:

Name: George Parker, Occ: Baker
Birth Date: 17 Sep 1868
Baptism Date: 12 Mar 1873
Archive Provided Parish: Croydon, St Michael
Parish as it Appears: Croydon, St Michael and All Angels
Father: John Parker
Mother: Emily Harriet Parker
Reference Number: 3039/1/1
Address: Frith Road

Rosie Report 4 Aug 2015 09:36

yes, thats the correct one - parents are same. I have checked 1871 census and his age is clearly 9 making his birth 1862 but in 1881 he is only 12 b 1869 ? So, that baptism is right

ok, will also check - my keyboard is having a crisis so its taking time to respond without a row of oooooooooooooooooo's etc ! But Margaret Holmes could be a clue to one of the girls names

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Aug 2015 09:42

Think this must be the family arriving in Canada, George having gone ahead a few months earlier:

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
Name: Polly Parker
Gender: Female
Age: 37
Birth Year: abt 1871
Date of Arrival: 19 Dec 1908
Vessel: Empress of Britain
Port of Arrival: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and St John, New Brunswick, Canada
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

(Polly is of course an alternate of Mary). With her are Edie 11; Dorothy 10; Maggie 8; Maud 6; Mary 3 and Nora 2 months. They're all headed to Kenora. All born England.

Rosie Report 4 Aug 2015 09:55

Great - thanks. Now, any news of theer whereabouts once in Canada or records showing they moved to America.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 4 Aug 2015 09:56

Rosie - re: the 1871 census, it's quite possible that his parents had an earlier son called George who died and they then, as often happened, gave the later son the same name.

EDIT: Hmm, thinking again. If that was the case it doesn't explain how the later one was born 1869 but not on 1871 census.

Something's not adding up.

LondonBelle

LondonBelle Report 4 Aug 2015 09:57

The Holmes family was in Thornton Heath in the 1891 census and there was a Mary, daughter aged 20 B Hanley Staffs with them

Rosie

Rosie Report 4 Aug 2015 10:07

Yes, I had also thought of that MarieCeleste although john and Emily didnt marry until 1865 but who knows? George's brother William was born in Chatham in 1866 and I cant find father John Parker in 1861.

Rosie

Rosie Report 4 Aug 2015 10:27

in 1871 George is recorded as being 2 years old which points to the right babtism and birth in 1868. I think that the age of 9 could have been copied onto the form with the 2 being mistranscribed - it looks very neat on the census and maybe the records were transferred to the final forms from someone with bad handwriting !!! Waffling again - so I think that is the reason and George age 9 is really the only one.

Bingo - also in 1871 george is recorded as 2nd son below William who is age 4 (correct ) so if George was older than William he would have been first - ha!

Rosie Report 4 Aug 2015 10:45

we have a baptism for George and his dob is september 1868. The census was taken in April in 1871 so that would make George 2 years 7 months at the time of the census
