Remember that on the 1841 census ages of those over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0 so that both James and Alice are listed as 40 so could have been 40-44, therefore born between 1797-1801.

Also it just says born Lancashire not necessarily Preston.

I think this must be a different family as James getting married in 1822 couldn't have been born in 1818!

probably not!

In most cases neither parents are shown on marriages before about 1835. If a parent was shown, it would be the father, but unlikely.

Note that the 1851 Census says James was born in Manchester ............
that could be Manchester proper, or it could actually have been one of the areas such as Salford.

Preston is a bit far from Manchester to be considered "Manchester".
