How long after birth could registration be?

I have a birth January1848. Baptism February 1848 but the only registered birth that fits is September 1848. Could it be that a birth in January was registered in September. It seems a long delay.

Nowadays it is 42 days (or at least it was when I registered my children). But in 1848 registration was not mandatory. It was made compulsory in 1875

So I guess it is possible it wasn't registered at all or, possible it was registered very late

What are the baby's name and the mother's maiden name?

Hi Jude thanks for your reply.

Baby's name is James Clark born London, mother's maiden name is Paget. Clark could be with or without an e.

There is no James Clark(e) MMN Paget in the records. So looks like your birth wasn't registered.

Hi Chris I do have Henry born 1844 James born 1848 was also inWhite Bear gardens. Henry is not in 1851 census but James is along with John probably the illegitimate son of Caroline.

I just think he wasn't registered.

There was a thread recently and they had about 8 children most of whom were baptised and only two of whom were registered! And these were after it was mandatory to register as well!
