I think that is a strong possibilty.

I can't see any other records for a Cicely Kate Summerton.

Thanks Andrew.

Transcribed as Cicily Kate LIMMERTON on FMP's 1871 - no wonder she can't be found on there!!

Another thing (As it's so quiet on here)

Emily's father James Summerton born 1820 Romsey, Hampshire

He appears on the 1871 census that GreyGhost mentioned...........then he seems to disappear.

I can't find an appropriate death for him between 1871--1881 though.

In fact there are no deaths registered for a James Summerton between 1871--1881.

This has all been researched before

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1348910

There's some more info re Fred's army career there (found by Greyghost).
Maybe they were both in Ireland, in 1881.

I do believe you are both on the right track!

Safc...........i searched for deaths for Summerton and Sommerton........but not Somerton.

Yes Mary...........his occupation was a "Tailor" and that is exactly where he was living in 1871.

If he died in Fareham RD then he was likely in Knowle Hospital

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=369

Now turned into apartments in the old hospital buildings and new housing

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowle_HospitalGenealogy[edit] --

All documents and records of the asylum that still exist are held by the Hampshire Records Office in Winchester. The accession number for the collection is 48M94/ and many records relating to former patients are held, including admissions information, case notes, discharge and death registers, postmortem reports and a burial register. A number of these records are contained in volumes that are still subject to a 100-year closure rule; any work on those volumes, for records outside the closure period, must be undertaken by an archivist at the records office on behalf of the public.
