Thank you Austin, that certainly looks very interesting :-) That was my next port of call, the criminal possibilities. It might explain a lot I think, also some of the changes of occupation on marriages and census.
Maybe he chose the surname Barnes as an alias because it is just across the river from Chiswick. :-D

I can't find a John Wakeford born in Brighton 1868,if it isn't brother of Joseph it's a bit of a coincidence.

Mary, I don't know but I might make the guess that as the 1899 marriage is bigamous John gave his father as deceased ( basing that on my bigamous grandfather on other side doing similar) ?
on the marriage of Annie gives George as a labourer
Name: Annie Maria Wakeprd ( Wakeford) Estimated birth year: abt 1865 Age: 23 Spouse: William John Fishlock Spouse Age: 46 Record Type: Marriage Event Date: 25 Jun 1888 Parish: St Michael and All Angels, Bedford Park Borough: Hounslow Father Name: George Wakeferd Spouse Father: William Fishlock Register Type: Parish Register
