OK- done a little digging. I need to crisp up a few things- but David was not born with surname Holland. It's a bit to get your head around and I don't know who his real parents were!

Birth:
DARCY, DAVID THOMAS (Mother's maiden name: DARCY)
GRO Reference: 1878 S Quarter in SALFORD Volume 08D Page 22

In 1881- living in Pendleton- Bridget is the Bridget Holland listed as his Mother in 1911.

Now we know that in 1901 David was listed as Holland and living with Emilie. His 'mother' Bridget is also living in Yorkshire in 1901 with her married daughter Mary Ann- She is now listed as Beatrice Holland:

AustinQ Report 16 Jun 2017 17:17

Note that when Bridget's husband dies in 1872 his surname is Hoolin. Daughter Margaret is also registered under surname Hoolin. So I suspect that Holland is another variation on the Hoolihan surname.

William's death:
name(s) WILLIAM HOOLIN
Gender Male
Birth year 1842
Age 30
Death quarter 2
Death year 1872
District Salford
County Lancashire
Volume 8D Page 14
----------------------------------------------------

Birth's of Ellen and Margaret:

HOOLIHAN, ELLEN (mother's maiden name: DOHERTY )

HOOLIN, MARGARET (mother's maiden name: DOHERTY)
GRO Reference: 1872 J Quarter in SALFORD Volume 08D Page 31

I think the only way to know who David's Mum/ Parents were is to get his birth certificate:

Birth:
DARCY, DAVID THOMAS (Mother's maiden name: DARCY)

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 28 Jun 2017 12:24

This is a tough one!

Just to confirm the birth certificate is the correct one- this is David in 1939- birth a day out, but that's not unusual:

Holland Household 1 Higgins Bottoms Buildings , Salford C.B., Lancashire, England

David Holland 26 Jun 1878 Male Builders Labourer Widowed
Eileen (M) Kirkwood (Holland) 11 Jan 1920 Female Mens Clothing Machinist Single
Sorry, this record is officially closed.

Elizabeth Holland 06 Mar 1925 Female Cotton Shirt Machinist Single

No marriages of Bridget Darcy to Thomas Darcy- wondering if Bridget Hoolihan was his mother after all. Perhaps a short affair with a Thomas Darcy after her husband's death?

Pamela

Pamela Report 28 Jun 2017 12:32

Thanks for taking another look. Yes that is correct person on 1939 as the address is correct. Just as you say one day out on birth. Just wondering how many times Bridget actually got married?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 28 Jun 2017 12:46
