Hi.

I have John, son of Joseph and Alice.

Siblings are Samuel, Robert, Benjamin, Ralph, Sarah, Ann, Joseph, James and Betty all born in Bolton.

Am struggling to find a marriage for him.

Parents had passed away by 1841 census so it's a struggle.

1851 census has a John B. with Ann. Seems that he was born in Botton accoding to An****stry although it says Botton, Lancs, not Yorks. Is it him?

Phil

Thank you

Hi Dea. Joseph and Alice had the children I mentioned.

The Alice aged 50 is not the mother. She was born in 1778. Joseph 20, though, is a brother of John. Alice could well be a sister of the father Joseph.

Can't be Cowperthwaite option as father is Edward in this case.

Yes, this could be the same Alice.

I need to make it clear that I have no idea if John did marry or whether he died young or even joined the army.

A brother of his, Ralph appears to be the only one that became a military man, marrying in Bangalore in 1841.

Dea

Dea Report 26 Sep 2017 08:18

If that is 'your' Joseph on 1841 then he is still at the same address with 'that' Alice on 1851 and he is down as her son:

The 1850 death above for an Alice is not the one. That one was a young child.

Dea. Thank you for striving to find the answer. I really don't know where to go from here. I may look at military options/overseas marriages perhaps?? A burial/death for John??

Dea

Dea Report 26 Sep 2017 21:20

Hi Phillip,

I have looked at the Military possibility and found nothing - also for a death for John but again nothing seems to show which fits.

I do think it's worth looking for a Scottish marriage if indeed that is him with Ann on 1851 and 1861. You need the 'ScotlandPeople' site which unfortunately requires credits, although I think you can do an initial free search but then pay for any details?

I think that Ann was from Leith in Scotland on one of the census.

Malyon posted this marriage earlier- this gives a little more detail- note that John is a rope maker- matching the 1851 census, and Ann is a widow. The marriage is a little after the 1851 census was taken, but might be worth considering.
