Where can I access Electoral Registers for Glasgow ?

I have, with help via this site, found some distant cousins who at some point moved to Glasgow after 1911 (On 1911 English Census) and would love to know when they moved to the area.

Charles Alexander & wife Elizabeth (Nee Broomfield) & their 2 daughters - Doris & Mary Lillian Alexander.

Doris married in 1940 in Pollock, Glasgow & Mary Lillian married in 1941 in Blythswood, Glasgow.

Charles died 1955 in Glasgow, & Elizabeth died 1944, also Glasgow.

So, Somewhere between 1911 & 1940, the family moved to Glasgow - but when??

Can anyone kindly help me on this one?

A man of a very genial disposition, Mr. Broomfield earned the good esteem of his colleagues, as well as of the travelling public.
The genial figure of Mr. Broomfield will be missed by those familiar with the workings of that hive of travelling activity, Newcastle Central Station.

On the 1920 valuation roll, Charles G. Alexander is the proprietor / occupier of 21 Regenrt Park Square. He doesn't appear on the 1915 valuation roll.

Thanks Rootsgatherer, I take it that the family arrived in Glasgow between 1915 - 1920, immediately post war.

Chris, thanks again! I have had a look at the link you gave and also looked again at the address on the certificate. It makes sense that it reads 'Nithsdale Road'. The way it was written down - curly lettering etc.. I can see it now!!

I wonder when he moved to 2, Thorncliffe Gardens? And why he ended up at Nithsdale Road where he died in 1955?? Friends / family - who knows?

He's at 2 Thorncliffe Gardens 1945-55, per Glasgow ERs on Ancestry, along with John L and Mary L Dewar, presumably daughter and son-in-law.

He must have moved in with them after Elizabeth's death.

After much searching, can't seem to find 191 Nithsdale Road in 1955 to see who's living there.

Yes, John L & Mary L Dewar are daughter & son in law.

As for the other address, it might be 196, Nithsdale Road.

This house number is driving me crazy!!! Might be read as 191, 191c, or maybe 196 !! Try no. 196 please.

The death entry/cert is well written and generally clear, BUT sometimes the way a word or number is written down just throws everything out. This is what is happening here!!

Aha! finally found the right part of Nithsdale Road!

However 191 isn't listed. Nor 191c.

At 196 there's Clara & Oswald T Fisher, Jemima J Galbraith, Catherine & Mary MacKinnon, Jessie Mitchell, and Annie O'Donnell.

Each number is a "close" or "stair" of several flats, so that's maybe 5 households.

What was the cause of death? If something sudden, like a heart attack, maybe he just happened to be visiting someone there when he died.
His usual place of residence was Thorncliffe Gardens, so he wasn't actually living in Nithsdale Road.

So it is number 196, Nithsdale Road !! YAY!

I don't recognise the names you give. Possibly friends etc........


On death certificate it states:-

Name - Charles Grigson Alexander, (widower of Elizabeth Broomfield)

Date of death:- 11th December, 1955, 4hr 30m AM at 196, Nithsdale Road
(Usual residence - 2, Thorncliffe Gardens, Glasgow)

Cause of death:- Cardio Vascular Degeneration Coma as certified by John Robertson MB CH B

Aged 76 years

Informant:- William Drummond, Son in Law, 40, Largie Road, Glasgow


William Drummond was his other son in law - married to his daughter Doris Alexander.

Edit - Doris not Mary Lillian. Have changed daughters name!

If Charles died at 4.30am, he must have at least been spending the night in Nithsdale Road!

4.30 am does seem a tad early! So, yes, must have spent the night.

Chris, I had forgotten about Adam Broomfield's death. You did mention it earlier, too. Wonder where in Glasgow?

The Alexanders lived in the Pollok area of Glasgow - so Adam died in roughly the same area.

He's not on the Glasgow ER's

You'd have to spend a few credits on SP to view the cert to know the exact address.

Adam Broomfield died 1st April, 1929, ages 84 years.

He died at 21, Regents Park Square, Glasgow - Same address as Charles & Elizabeth Grigson (Daughter & Son in Law) !!

Residence - 52, Woodbine Street, Gateshead, England.

His daughter, M. Broomfield, of 52, Woodbine Street, Gateshead, England' was present at death and is the informant of the death.

Death by 'Natural Causes, Anbabes Syncone (??), (Sudden Death).

Can't quite make out the Latin medical term above. I think it says Anabed Syncone' Totally unsure!!

He was a 'Widower of Mary Anderson'.

So, he was visiting family with at least another of his daughters (M. Broomfield).

At least we now have his death information and an address in Gateshead, England.
