Find Ancestors

James Baughan married Mary Ann Clark in Maryleboe in 1881. On his marriage certificate he gives his father as Henry Baughan (Wheelwright). Although I have found him in later censuses I can't find him pre 1891.

The following may be his siblings:- All born St George Hanover Square
Emma Baughan (1839), Edwin (1840), Sophia Baughan (1843), Susannah (1844), William (1847) Sarah (1849), Thomas (1852), Elizabeth (1854).

Can anyone help to find the family in the censuses.

I'm a little confused by Henry's wives. He marries Elizabeth Hodgson in 1838 and she is clearly the mother of his children but who are Charlotte Baughan (b Walthamstow 1815) in the 1861 census and Susannah E Baughan (1816 Essex) in the 1871 census. I can't find the relevant deaths or marriages.

Interesting.....could this be the first marriage, to a relative, or even sister, of his second wife? This would actually have been illegal in 1838, to marry your deceased wife's sister....

Susannah C Baughan and Charlotte Baughan might be one and the same if 'C' stood for Charlotte and she was sometimes known by her middle name?

No joy on remarriages though.

Looks good Erika, and that fact that father Henry is a wheelwright helps confirm the likeliness the 1831 marriage is correct.

Incidently the probate for Henry mentioned earlier shows the sole executrix to be
Elizabeth Hodgson, spinster of 24 Bourdon street (also the abode and place of Death for Henry) who proved the will.

So no obvious clues there about any further wives.

I definitely think Susannah C Baughan and Charlotte Baughan are the same woman, as I intimated previously, but now I think that woman is also the 'Elizabeth' that Henry married in 1838.
