E. H. Dixon was a landscape painter. His/her subjects ranged from St Pancras Old Church up to Tufnell Park, Highgate and Hampstead, over the 1830s/1840s. There was then a gap before a flurry of painting in the Holborn area, as well as some reworking of earlier paintings, in 1867. On this basis I would guess a birth date around 1810 and a death around 1868.
Th paintings form a valuable and accomplished record of the period, but nothing is known of his/her origins. Handwriting suggests a confident, artistic person.
I would love to hear from anyone that can provide a lead.

I've tried that, Shirley. First port of call. No joy

The Wellcome Collection has some works. Perhaps contacting them would prove fruitful

I might suggest this one? The birth year is way out, but it's possible he started young OR that the dates online for his work are out by a few years. Listed here as "Artist and professor of drawing"

This is most helpful to my search. He/she has paintings at the Wellcome Library, the British Museum, London Metropolitan Archives, Camden Local Studies and Archives and Islington Local History Centre. None of them has been able to help, nor has Camden History Society, an active local group.
Thanks for your help. I shall study the information carefully.

It doesn't help a lot re Edward, but this is possibly the marriage of the parents, noting that Edward's daughter Catherine used middle name Spencer

It looks like a member of the Hows family has a tree on Ancestry, so might be worth contacting to see if they know anything?

Well! That certainly shows one auction house appears to know the artist's full name. Another piece of an emerging jigsaw. Thanks for your forensics. I am most impressed. Now I need to start colouring the CV, to create a real character, whose paintings reflect not only his interests but also his personal situation.
Thanks again.
