If you could get hold of a copy of the original parish register for Edward's marriage to Catherine Hows you could then compare Edwards signature to a signature on one of his paintings??

Just to keep info here, I looked again at the image for 1841/51 and pretty sure it says engraver not engineer .

Well! That certainly shows one auction house appears to know the artist's full name. Another piece of an emerging jigsaw. Thanks for your forensics. I am most impressed. Now I need to start colouring the CV, to create a real character, whose paintings reflect not only his interests but also his personal situation.
Thanks again.

Catherine Dixon nee Hows was a "teacher of music & French" on the 1871 census ,

this may well be her in 1851 1851 England, Wales & Scotland Census
5, Wellington Terrace, Barking, Romford, Essex, England

Catherine Hows Head Unmarried Female 28 1823 Ladies School Governess Spitalfields, Middlesex, England <<<<
Ann Coy - Unmarried Female 81 1770 Annuitant Lincolnshire, England
Hannah M Widdop Teacher Unmarried Female 21 1830 Undercase Of Guardian Brighouse, Yorkshire, England
Sarah A Toomer - - Female 18 1833 Iron Mongers Daughter Newbury, Berkshire, England
Harriet Chapman Servant Widow Female 50 1801 House Servant Hornchurch, Essex, England

It looks like a member of the Hows family has a tree on Ancestry, so might be worth contacting to see if they know anything?

It doesn't help a lot re Edward, but this is possibly the marriage of the parents, noting that Edward's daughter Catherine used middle name Spencer

Occupation Engineer *** EDITED for ref any one adding, on image it is "engraver" this ties in to census and late baptism for son Edward, see later posts .

This is most helpful to my search. He/she has paintings at the Wellcome Library, the British Museum, London Metropolitan Archives, Camden Local Studies and Archives and Islington Local History Centre. None of them has been able to help, nor has Camden History Society, an active local group.
Thanks for your help. I shall study the information carefully.

I might suggest this one? The birth year is way out, but it's possible he started young OR that the dates online for his work are out by a few years. Listed here as "Artist and professor of drawing"

I've tried that, Shirley. First port of call. No joy

The Wellcome Collection has some works. Perhaps contacting them would prove fruitful
